My roof noise has gone from bad to worse....

Loud "thuds" on bumps, uneven surfaces or cat eyes... In addition, I had reported the issue of the roof "hard closing" where the rear window comes down on the deck HARD!! The tech reported that it was within specs and no action was needed. However, it seems to have become bad and I fear that one of these days the glass will shatter while the rear roof lands on the deck.

Has anyone here had the same issue with the roof "hard closing"??

Glad I could help.

I've still not had the weather to remove this piece and locate the rubbing surfaces but I will when its warm enough. The tightening of the nuts doesn't last, my noise returns within a few weeks, it must be the flexing of the car. I tighten them again and noise goes, but they must work loose over time. So I'll have to take it apart to find the surfaces making the noise to felt them and hopefully fix this for good.

Not a bad suggestion, but I want to find the actual cause of the noise before I refit and tighten permanently. The last thing I want is to permanently tighten these nuts and another noise in the same area appears requiring investigation. I figure a small amount of felting to the affected area will probably sort it out, it has most others. Then yes I may just try some loctite.

Problem fixed. The rear deck was banging down in the corners. The rear shelf sits on plastic lips on left and right. Either BMW or previous owner had stuck on under the shelf some thin sticky backed felt , which had moved. So replaced with some sticky backed foam pads used to prevent hi-fi, etc from scratching surfaces.

A is rear deck, B shows the rubber foam pad.

So today I spent an hour taking apart the buffer strip on the car. 14 bolts and the strip is removed.

I felted all parts and reassembled.

The noise has returned.

I've now had enough of issue chasing. However minor. I have spent far too much time addressing issues on a very expensive car. Lesson learned. I give up.

I will get my summer enjoyment from the car and then trade it for something simpler.

^LOL, oh man, just enjoy the car. Can't believe that this thread is still going at it...is the noise really that intolerable? I can't hear too much in mine, at least not enough to make me want to sell the thing. That is quite extreme.

I've just had enough now. So many issues. I've just lost interest in driving it. The love is gone.

I spent 5min with a socket tightening those nuts..didn't make much difference, i think you are just pulling the surface further away from the folding top.
I found the whole deck area was moving up and down, and thats how the sticky pads cured the problem. Now is all silent. When the rear deck closes it must rest on adjustable stops, to make flush with the bodywork. But can still be gap where rear deck 'hovers' over the join between the plastic trim just behind the roll hops.
The sticky pads stop the rear deck banging onto the trim just behind your head.
I tried driving and reaching back and holding the deck down and thats how i found out it made a difference.
Remember the cabin is small and sound travel... a sound in my right ear turned out to be the tax disc holder vibrating over on the left!

And another irritant, sound like grit hitting windshield, actually plastic clicking around windshield area. Couple of sticky pads where sun visors touch trim cured that problem.

Getting there slowly.

May I suggest that you and your car rent out a cabin, go out on a romantic weekend getaway to patch things up?

Are lease rates good in the UK? That's another way to avoid long term issues...

There are some very good lease (pcp) deals on Z4 and some other models. Currently the z4 has up to £10,000 dealer contribution. Which is huge. I don't want another z4 though.

I don't blame you. Sucks when you have to chase down issues rather than enjoy the machine.. on the other hand, everything fun is complex these days, so there is an element of luck involved regardless of which make or model you chose

IMHO, get something fun that has a great lease deal, enjoy it and give it back to let someone else chase down the issues next time.

Btw, besides this aggravating mysterious noise, what else irks you about your car? Replacing the DCT? Anything else? Just currious.

Issues to date (that I can recall right now):

Failed rear heated screen (replaced).
Roof mechanism alignment issues (fixed).
Exhaust valve rattle (new exhaust, thought the valve has failed again now).
Three replaced 296 alloys (cracks).
Two ruined rear tyres replaced at my cost due to cracked wheels.
Two replacement sets of rear light clusters.
DCT replacement.
Interior trim defects (centre console replaced).
Broken roof tray (replaced).
Many rattles and noises (mostly fixed).
Steering column noise (knocking, replaced).
HPFP failure (replaced).
Cracked plastic on rear of bulkhead (I've bought this part to replace myself)

I am now looking into an odd rear wheel vibration, knocking from front suspension (started after DCT was replaced but dealer can find nothing). Boing from rear over sleeping policemen (speed humps). Plus exhaust valve needs fixing.

90% of the above was replaced FOC under warranty but it was the hassle behind it and the way it's left me feeling about the car.

The car is now out of warranty so any new issue to resolve are at my buck.

I am sure you can understand my wish to move to something else...

Holy crap! No lemon law...so what kind of protection does an owner have in the UK? You've obviously had an incredible amount of serious problems. Did you ever ask corporate BMW to make good?

Was this on the "old style" or the "new style" 296 with the thicker metal near the inside of the wheel?
