Roof leak :(

After three hours of back breaking yard work this weekend I didn’t have the energy left to hand wash my 2011. So I did the next best thing. I brought it to my local brushless drive thru car wash I know, I know, that’s a big no no. As I pulled out into the blower for the air dry a good amount of water was dripping on my left knee. It appeared to be coming from where the roof meets the A pillar. Anyone else have a roof leak?

YES, in the exact same space. Only happens during a drive thru car wash or after an especially heavy storm. There is an opening somewhere in the seal, not a big one but I have an idea it wouldnt be hard to find. Would like to try and seal it myself but not sure of what compound/sealant to use.

Take it to the dealer OP and get them to readjust the roof and/or windows and change the seals if needed.

I take my car into brushless automatic washes all the time with no leaks anywhere. not during the wash and not during the dryer

Being a Floridian I'm sure you know when we get rain we get hit hard! When I bought the car in Davie I drove it back in a pretty heavy downpour and it didn't leak then. This was the only time I have ever had it in a car wash. Having Vista BMW take a look at it at my next visit before our rainy season hits.

Same area leaked in mine as well and always through the car wash. I'm too lazy to wash it by hand. Took it in for an adjustment, has happened since.

car wash leak

I wash my car all winter at a local car awash with pressure hose.
No leaks at all. But I try not too put the nozzle to close to the joints.
However, the dealer told me that it could happen if i was to use a power jet water.

I have seen where those blowers can blow hard enough to lift the top a little and allow a small amount of water to seep into the cabin. Usually not an issue unless you are feeling like a cup of water or some was running down your leg. I would just check it with a water hose to see if running water over the top leaks. if so then you have a broken seal. shouldn't be terribly expensive to repair.

When I get a chance I'll hit it with my pressure washer. If I can't get it to leak with 2500 PSI it's safe to say that it may have been a one time occurrence. This was my first time driving it thru a car wash. My concern is we do get some pretty heavy tropical rain storms here in South Florida.

Kinda hate to warm this one up, but there was a post a while back about a butler throwing water on the car from a bucket (if I recall correctly) & somebody's iPad got soaked because of it ...

Anyway, if you use the same bucket technique, maybe you can find the source of the leak ...

I would start with a garden hose on low personally...

Also, since we have several examples of E89 with no issues in high pressure car washes or storms, if you get ANY water into the interior, even once, I think that is a sign of a deteriorated seal or misalignment issue that needs to be fixed by the dealer before it gets worse.

Took your advice and last night I decided to grab the hose and blast it for a good minute in stream setting. I had my wife sitting in the car inspecting. NO LEAKS! For the heck of it I ran it through another car wash. Just a basic wash. No brushes, no cheap purple and blue wax. High pressure water only. Sure enough, it leaked! Comparing the driver to passenger side I can see no difference in the seal. I may just need an alignment somewhere. We'll see.....

That's what some people would have you believe

I think it means you need to hit BMW up for some warranty dollars
