Job 1 or Job 2 Pros and Cons

...albeit not in San Fran

My choice would be #1 all day... but at a $130K in salary, (assuming you are single)... not sure how one can survive on this there in the most expensive real estate market in the USA.

Sure, life isn't all about money, but for 10 hours, 66k is a lot of money. Hell, you could upgrade your car and make that 35 min commute freaking awesome.

Unless you believe that Job #1 has growth opportunities, (ie you'll be at a higher salary, title, responsibility in <5 years)

Let's look at this differently. If we say $50K per year you are leaving on the table - since this would be a new baseline. Let's say you are 35-ish and have 30 more years to work. That's $1.5 Million, not including appreciation. That's a lot of money.

That's college for all your kids (unless Catholic, then it's college for most of your kids). That's a nice house in a nice place. Just thinking out loud.

This is how i think of it and well.

Even for just 5 years that can easily equate to 5 revenue generating properties. Or just $300k to invest as you see fit. Plus, after 5 years of job 2, most jobs will feel like job 1.

No such thing as driving fast in traffic. A 35 minute drive means ~10 miles and mostly stop and go traffic.

You forgot the 2 hr lunch, work at home, and no overtime, ever. Job 1 is literally like <5hrs actually working each day, the other is more like 10 hours/day, plus travel and weekends potentially. It's like double the work.

this thread made me realize how hard I work and that there is a cohort of BMW drivers that are lazy AF. Seriously, 9am start and a 2 hour lunch while leaving at 4:30? My retired dad works more than that out of enjoyment. WHat kind of job is this?

These are some very good terms... but nothing can put a price on time...

The amount of people that I have seen slaving their life away, until they hit retirement and realize they are too old or unhealthy to do anything is sad... very sad.

To an extent, you are right. But, I am pretty sure Job #2 is not a slave-your-life-away job such as an I-banker or MckBainGroup consultant. Just because it requires more time than #1 doesn't mean it is a shit job with no free time. To me, job #2 seems like a cushy job because it is all relative. I consistently travel 75% of the time, work long days (9pm/10pm), and manage all sorts of bad behaviors. Even I still have time to go to the gym consistently, travel to places my wife and I want to go, fix up my house, go on dates and do activities with my wife, wash my cars, etc. Plus, my job is actually interesting because I work hard at it. How much free time do people need? If free time is all that matters then why even try? Money doesn't buy happiness but it can by experiences that turn into happiness.

Job 2 for me. But Im used to long days and Im always working, even when I get home. Ive worked places were 7-3 or 8-4 was the normal day and I got so bored with all the free time. 8-6 is nothing and that still leaves tons of time to do stuff outside of work.

And I prefer a longer commute. Gives me time to get ready for the day, and decompress afterwards. I actually moved from being 5 minutes from the office to 30 minutes.

Another thing to consider is how flexible are they with you day to day. If you do have kids, would they be cool with you leaving mid day to take care of them? Or do you have to stay at the office all day no matter what.
