Why not? My STi was a 4-cyl and after some tuning was considerably faster than our current 35is.

Certainly. I don't have any particular love of number of cylinders as long as it does what I ask of it. I've driven/ridden 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, & 8 cyl.

only in a Mini, and that is part of the reason I do not own one; I haven taken the Cooper S on a test drive and it was buzzy and peppy but really not even that quick. no thanks.

Not if the same car could be had with an N54.
We have a Z3 with 171K miles that we've had since new. It's a great little 6 in the Non-Turbo flavor but it is just a bit too boring. The 4 would never deliver the smoothness and torque of the twin-turbo. We've had several 4's, even a couple of BMW 4's and they just don't deliver.

I've owned several turbo Audi 4's chipped and fast, but honestly I prefer the I6 by leaps and bounds. I prefer the non-turbo I6 over the turbo. It's like a high revving V12 over a V8...Yummy.

Not if it costs in excess of $35K.

I echo the sentiments of fellow posters here.
I've driven 4-bangers all my life and couldn't wait to finally drive a torquey, more pwrful engine. The 4s simply can't be as smooth and pwrful as a 6+. Besides, our cars are overpriced as it is, nevermind trying to justify paying similar prices for 2 less cyls. No way. The only 4 cyl car I would consider is the concept Alfa Romeo 4C: now *that's* an awesome 4 cyl car. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfa_Romeo_4C |

Like others have said not in this price range. I don't want a 50k plus car that sounds like a civic. Don't get me wrong I love my civic its great project car.

e30 M3 was a 4cyl. I suppose no one would want to drive a Lotus either? Granted I will always buy the most powerful engine available for the model I am interested in but I won't exclude a vehicle based on cylinder count. Performance is the key for me.

BMW made their reputation on 4-cylinder engines.

I find that the 4 cylinders tend to be more noisy rascals. I think I heard the new Z4 4Cyl on one of the videos posted here. Then again with the turbo it might just be somewhat similar (certainly not the same) to the pickup some of you fellows experienced with the e89 twin turbo (I did love the e89 pickup it was fantastic real super).
Would I go to a 4cy. no ... a definite no that is, yes it is more economical for sure, then when one spends in excess of $60K on a car one should not be concerned about fuel consumption anyway. Going from a 4Cy to an 8Cyl yes then to a 10 Cyl later in life for sure when one looks for a more quieter performer ... if they still make them then who knows what the future holds ...
