Crap, I didn't want to do more research and bought the Z4's winter RFT set. Guess I'll be stuck w/ those in addition to my summers for a while.

What did you get?
I ordered my winter rims/tyres from BMW, 290 17' rims with 225/45/17 91H Continental Wintercontacts 810 S SSR for 1400 €. Includes mounting etc.

I assume you got the 17 inch wheels with the pirelli winter tires. Because they are 17 inch wheels, the ride is quite good, and the winter tires work very well on the car considering its a low riding car. I wouldnt be upset about the winter package. The summers though are worth looking into. I have the winter package and its quite good.

I have the same rims but Pirelli Sottozeros, I think?

Do you think a non-RFT winter set would have been better? I've read that for summer setups, non-RFTs are far superior...so I wonder if it makes a big diff in winter driving being equipped w/ RFTs vs nons?

im finding the run flat pirellis on 17inch wheels for the winter are fine. The ride is quite good and I dont have to worry about -20 below dealing with problems. Its one thing to deal with a flat in the summer, its another to have to deal with it when its freezing outside. Im going to explore the summer non rft tires though. But im sticking with the winter setup.

How well spoken!

BTW I still get that feeling when I drive my 1987 535is and hope to feel some of that with my Z4 35i once I rid myself of the RFT set

I noticed in the beginning of the topic mentioning about the Michelin run-flats. I have them on my e90 3-series and I can tell you they are crap. The car feels like it's not having tires as all, like driving on the rims.

I'm waiting for my Z4 23i to be produced and delivered to me :-)
The production week is 43 (this week) and I was wondering if it's coming with the 3G of run-flats from Bridgestone as so they say are much much better. The dealer has no idea.

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/07/06/r...ck-out-of-run/

So, is there anyone here that got his/her car recently and can confirm or not that it is indeed coming with the 3G run-flats from Bridgestone?

I have no idea, however go to your link above, then scroll down to "Comment
No, 11 by Mike" he posted

I quote .... I'd add that the 3G RFT is already in production in Japan and is set to debut later this year on an BMW product..... End quote.

In my mind it all depends on how much backlog BMW has and what generation of tires BMW has at the assembly plant. I will shortly purchase my winter tires and while at the shop I will enquire how one can ID a Bridgestone RFT as to the Generation Number. My wild guess is you most properly will have Generation 2 on your new car ... Do let us know once you get your car it be good information.

If I find out about how to ID the tire I'll let you know

PS. In September I did read that Generation 3 is only available right now in Japan. I just cannot for the life of me find the source again

3G RFT have cooling fins on the side walls, so you can recognize the new ones.

Thanks Kris Do you know if there is also some sort of number on the tire that identifies it as the 3rd Generation?

Thanks!

No idea, I saw mentioned on a blog a roman II was going to be added. Anyway production is delayed. The first #G RFT out now is the Turanza standadrd on Toyota.

Thanks Kris

I started a new Thread yesterday in the TireRack area, feedback should be interesting as what new cars are being shipped with the G 3 and how they feel.

So-far people are looking in on this thread, however, no one responds. Seams either people don't know or don't care.

The S0001 could be the new Potenza 3G, if I understand the guy well.

From the looks of it, it seems I'll get the old generation rft on my yet-to-come z4. Still hoping though ...

Thanks Kris,

Looks like they know there are problems, I lost 2 rear wheels due to cracks in the weak section of my wheels bet heat played a roll as well when we drove thru the Mohave Desert this past summer Temperature was a booming 120 F (49C).

BTW, I checked into it this morning also got a post back from TireRack

Have a look at post #3 on the following link, Gary from TireRack basically confirms what I read someplace that the third Generation of RFT from Bridgestone is only available right now in Japan and not expected anywhere else any time soon.

Look at post 3 from Gary works for TireRack
