Z4 differential type - is it any good?
First of all, this is a bit early fpr me to ask since I'm still waiting for my Z4 to be produced (this very week), however, I'm really curious and puzzled by the differential in the Z4.
If you go to www.bmw.de and download the prices PDF, you will find as standard option on all Z4s (23i, 30i, 35i, 35is) a thing called "Elektronisches Sperrdifferential" (Electronic Differential Lock). So, naturally, I asked the dealer about it and he says that it's nothing special, it's just a marketing hype, it's only an open-diff -- however, I do (want to) believe that it is a bit more special than that. I wasn't expecting LSD (even though it would've been nice ) but at least some kind of more "advanced" diff in the Z4. After all, people mainly buy it to have fun, not to be comfortable or safe. You can get other cars for that. So, my question for you is this: is the diff in the e89 Z4 any good? Can you do a moderate drift on wet at least? Does it use the ADB-X? Is it like the EDL in the Mini? Even better, I would expect any kind of opinions related to installing a proper LSD (Quaife makes one I think). P.S. damn that cayman with it's LSD option :-) |

The Z does not have a true LSD. Basically it is an open diff the uses the ABS & traction control to limit wheel spin. It is nothing special. I would much prefer a real LSD.
