iDrive Only Shows Smartphone Address Book Phone Numbers
Folks,
On the way back into town today from a road trip, I decided to make a phone call through iDrive sync'd with my BlackBerry Z10 (I know, it's a work phone). I don't make outgoing calls very often from the car and the last time I did there was no issue - but it was also a different phone (same model of phone, but that one died so work gave me this new one). Today, when I went in to access the address book, all that came up was my list of telephone numbers, which is basically useless. Frustrated, I waited until I had pulled over and then searched every menu I could find to alter the way contact list entries are displayed, but it was already set correctly (sort by last name, first name). Even an address book search only yielded options to enter numerical characters. Before today, I have never seen this. Has anyone else seen this? With any smartphone? If so, can you let me know how you sorted it out? I've searched this forum and Google and have come up short thus far. At this point I've only found one suggestion that looked halfway promising and it talked about the contact list being encrypted. I've looked at this and I have no encryption turned on at all. Thanks in advance!

I've not seen this but it sounds more phone specific than car. I'd call blackberry and ask them as the contacts are sent the same way on almost every car.

I use both iPhone 6+ and Blackberry Z10 in my 2011 Z4.
It is nothing to do with the car or sort order. It is the way Z10 stores contacts. On your iDrive address book, you see the numbers for some contacts displayed first and then the remaining contacts alpahbetically. On your desk/laptop, edit the contacts whose numbers only are displayed, check their first/last name and save them again. I sync my Z10's contacts with Exchange server. I opened the contacts with issues in Outlook and saved them again as "first name last name". This fixed the issue. I used Z10 as the primary phone in my car because it displays text and emails on the iDrive |

Update:
I have now completely removed the car from the phone and the phone from the car (wiped their Bluetooth records) and then pulled the battery on the phone. Booted it up again and re-paired them. Same thing. Re: what Cud said, NONE of the contacts show properly. I only see a very long list of phone numbers. When I open the contacts in Outlook, they are already set to display properly. Calling BlackBerry may be my next move.

Did you update the car's phone and media device firmware lately?

I haven't ever, but it's a 2012 that I bought in January of 2013. At that time I insisted that they upgrade all software (including GPS maps) to the latest. That doesn't mean there isn't newer firmware for it now, but as I said before, my old phone (same make/model) worked fine.

The newer phone may have newer firmware, even though it's the same model. BMW updates the phone software relatively frequently, even for our Z4's. This may not fix it, but it won't hurt either and if you have a USB stick ready, it's relatively quick and easy to do. You will need your VIN and you will want to do this from your computer (since you need to download the firmware upgrade):

I've scoured the Canadian site and have not found a similar tool. I did find a PDF that states my phone/carrier combination meets or exceeds BMW's requirements. Might give the dealer a call to find out if they know anything. P.S. the new phone DOES have a slightly newer OS than the old one did, because it was upgrading the OS that killed the old phone.

Try this VIN: WBALM7C54CE384449
Use at your own risk! From what I can tell, the car doesn't let you overwrite newer or not-for-the-Z4 firmware, but who knows, there may be a difference for Canadian spec cars. |

Not sure, maybe the VIN I used is for a barebones Z4? Just go to cars.com or some other web site like that, look for a Z4 similar to yours and use the VIN listed...

So after one more battery-pull reboot of the phone, I went out to the Z yesterday to collect some firmware information anticipating a call to the dealer today.
Everything is now back to normal. I don't know what to think, but as we are VERY near the end of the Z4 driving season here, I'm not going to spend any more time on it right now. Thanks for all of your suggestions and keep your fingers crossed that it's still working for me come spring.
