BMW E85 comparison to E89 and Complete Vehicle Guide

FYI
I found on line this "BMW E85 to E89 comparison and E89 Complete Vehicle Guide".

There is tons of really great information here on the complete car. After scanning many sections of this guide about the Z, I came away being absolutely scared about the complexity of this vehicle when considering long term ownership.

For example- Retractable Hardtop.
I knew when buying this car that the top was an engineering work of art and complex, but just take a look at the section concerning our retractable hardtops. Look at the monster amount of sensors, hydraulic pumps, electrical wiring, programming etc. actually involved. Incredible.

I love this car. I just hope that planned obsolescence is not part of the BMW ownership plan.

I don't think "over-engineering" is the same as "planned obsolescence". The Germans are famous for one; not the other!

BMWZrider, consider the complexity of space travel vehicles...I once read that there were over 20M individual parts in early space rockets (more now, I'm sure). Think of what even a 1% failure rate means. 200,000 faulty parts! Now your Z isn't so bad, right?

Good point and agreed.
Do think I can get an extended warranty from NASA for the when my Extended Gold Protection ends on June 2016?

Tell me about it. Gonna have a hard time buying any BMW convertible in the future. It would have to be a lease and under warrantee for the duration of the lease.

Would love to know if anyone out there has done any preventative maintenance on their convertible top to avoid the hydraulic lines leaking or exploding as I have read on other posts.
