Software Update

hey guys, need your suggestions.

Last time my car was in the shop, apparently they updated the software . Not knowing about it, I kinda messed up loading the flash tune and now need to get the dealer reinstall the software in the car.

I installed back the stock version. (older version than the one dealer updated) There is nothing wrong with the functionality of the car but I see an error code 2FA3, which I cannot get rid of.

I'm thinking it would be ideal to get the BMW software reinstalled which would take care of the error code. By doing so, they would not blame the tune (and void the warranty) if something goes wrong in the future.

How do you suggest I ask the dealer to update the software without mentioning the flash tune?

Perhaps tell them you're seeing intermittent issues with whatever systems were updated?

Tell them that the car feels kinda weird and have them hook up the diagnostics on it, the update will show up and it will automatically update the software.

I think that's the only option. Need to complain about something not related to engine as it may quickly lead to tune discussion. (assuming they will be able to tell that I installed flash update)

The ESS customer support was very helpful, as usual. They believe that service will only see the error caused by software version mismatch but won't be able to tell anything about the flash update. I just don't know....

Hi OP, one possibility to be prepared for is that they will know a flash was attempted because that is the only way for the software to be different from the one they upload during the prior service

As an aside, this is one reason why the best practice is to fully uninstall prior to bringing in for service.

How about taking it to a different dealer? They may not know what software was on there before, just that it isn't current. I'm not sure how centralized the data on the cars is.

Today, all updates come directly from Munich. So they should perfectly know the current software state.

That's great. I wonder if they always check for the required updates. I think they only install it if they think it's going to fix a problem.

If that's the case, back to square one. I wonder if I can go to another dealer and get them to update it without putting it to vehicle history. So much drama...

My opinion, you might need to come clean because I believe that between the key and the service record associated with the VIN all franchise dealers will know of what your software version "should be".

Can ESS flash your car with the OEM tune? Or do you have a SA you are good friends with?

I think you're right, need to come clean or find someone to do it off the record.

That's the first thing that came to my mind... ESS, although mostly very helpful, said they can't do anything. I wish there was a way to take care of it by reverse engineering or something...I mean how difficult is it to get a hold of the OEM files anyways...
