clear glass wind deflector
Hey Guys,
Am thinking about getting a clear glass/plastic wind deflector. I say glass or plastic cause i'm not sure which ones are the best or which brand is the best. Safety issue with glass? Obviously i don't want a plastic one which will loss it's clarity over time. Most probably will have to order one from the US or Europe or something. I don't like the standard BMW mesh one. If you can give me some feedback if you have one? post a url/site from where i can order one? thanks. mav. |

I don't trust 3M adhesive as stated in Roadster solution
"The brackets attach with a 3M automotive adhesive, just peal and stick." The wind shield made from plastic which is scratchable The other choice is from www.ur-windschott.de which use safety glass and screw mounting, which is more secure and durable Also it is very similar to Hartge wind deflector (may be OEM for Hartge)

I want a sheet of glass near my neck!
I don't have a deflector in my current car, but have a BMW one in my old Z4. It's fantastic. I plan to install a BMW one in my new Z4 once temperatures are likely to remain above freezing for an extended period.

Good point. Is that glass tempered? Blood would not look good on an extended white leather interior!

Modified OEM wind deflector
I don't like the mesh of OEM wind deflector, so I did some mod on this and replace with tempered glass. all problems above solved

This is a hand made job
first: disassemble the thing by pushing hard on 4 metal pins on each side, push until the pins drop inside. 2. The frame will be separated into 4 parts, remove the mesh but save the metal wire inside. 3. Cutout the pattern of the hole for glass sizing and add 2mm border 4. Send the glass for heat treated (tempered) 5. Shave off the plastic on the thicker frame to make room for 6mm glass, which I use small electric hand drill with sand paper head. 6. Find some rubber strip (from home windows) to fix the glass and also to cover some irregular edge from hand shaving 7. put back everything, if you do it properly, no glue or silicone sealant is needed Good luck

This is looking very look job well done! But a retractable glass like 6 series or MBZs shall be swell. May be damn or BMW can ask for a few 100$ as an option like mini does an ala cart solution.

Well done I must say ... you should offer a mod to members and go into business ... bet the mod cost (time and material) would run about 1/3 of the offered market price for one available on the net.

But you'll need the original BMW mesh windscreen first, and that runs you $500, plus another $100 for the mod. The one from roadster solutions runs you less than half. I am thinking about making one myself as well, but use some acrylic and aluminum brackets.
