Base Price and Metallic Paint Price Increase As of August 1, 2016

BMW has announced a base and metallic price increase for many models, effective August 1, 2016. Pricing for M models remain unchanged. The list of affected models is as follows:





As a result of the above mentioned price increases, the Maximum Residualizable MSRP has been increased from $49,100 to $49,400 for the 330i Sedan and from $51,100 to $51,400 for the 330i xDrive Sedan.

There are no base price changes to the MY2017 M2, M3, M4, 5 Series GT, 6 Series, M6, 7 Series, X5, X5 M, X6, X6 M, i3, and i8.

The option price for Metallic Paint will be increased effective August 1, 2016 from $550 to $700 on all MY2017 models. This includes: i3, 2 Series, M2, 3 Series, M3, 4 Series, M4, X1, X3, X4, 535i Gran Turismo, 535i xDrive Gran Turismo, X5 sDrive35i, X5 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive35d, X5 xDrive40e, X6 sDrive35i, and X6 xDrive35i.

Price Protection
BMW will price protect all bona-fide retail orders, with a confirmed production number, of the affected models that are produced on or after August 1, 2016 and delivered to customers by October 31, 2016.

Please note that pricing is no longer assigned at the time of wholesale. Vehicle pricing is now assigned once the vehicle completes production, status 160. To ensure that these retail orders are protected, a Center must designate the vehicle in the ordering system as a sold vehicle, with a customer name by the close of business on July 31, 2016.

Existing European Delivery orders with a confirmed delivery date will be honored if the vehicle is delivered and RDR’d by January 31, 2017. However, any new European Delivery orders accepted after July 31, 2016 will reflect the new pricing.

This is disappointing. I never did understand the value of metallic paint. I find it hard to believe it costs carmakers even a fraction of what they charge (in excess of normal paint).

I left BMW last year. Never looked back. Bought a Z06 Vette and Ford Expedition. So happy I did.

Relative to BMW's reporting currency, the dollar is quite strong (thanks largely to fed policy). Commodities and energy prices are also locally low...this has nothing to do with monetary policy and everything to do with growing margins as sales slow.

slow process for old habits to die. I recently replaced my M4 vert with a German sports car with a frunk. But I still read this and other Bmw forums, curious to see if I'm missing anything. Apparently missed a price increase 😎

While it's frustrating to see, most companies are following this trend. Especially if you are moving to another German brand. You won't escape the trend

What's interesting is how close BMW pricing on certain bread and butter models has come to Porsche's pricing. That could be one of the reasons X5 numbers are off in a big way, off by over 54% in July compared to July last year.

For example, moderately loaded X3 2.8 is within a hair of the new base Macan. Will be interesting to see how it holds up against it in the next 6 months. While X5 3.0 is now priced similar to Cayenne. While no one will argue that BMW is a premium product, I think most will also agree that BMW, for a variety of objective and subjective reasons, does not have Porsche status and cache. One has to only look at relative resale value of respective models (3 year old X5 3.0 v. 3 yo Cayenne; similar mileage) for a confirmation of an objective reason.

In the case of a reasonably spec'd M4 vert, pricing is at or above that of the new 718 Boxster S, and within a shouting distance of the new base Carrera. 😮
Buyers shopping in those price brackets are seeing the BMW pricing edge wither away faster than a recalled M differential 😉

BMWs are an expensive premium brand. There's no denying it, but I don't quite understand your Porsche comparison. Yes semi loaded to loaded BMWs approach Porsche base prices, but Porsche then nickel and dimes buyers like no other brand. All the a la carte options add up. My dad had 32k in option on his 911 and he didn't even get everything!

Honestly your comparison of a loaded BMW approaching a base Porsche is like asking me why I got a loaded 340i instead of a near base 528 because the 5 is more opulent. It's all about personal values.
