Does anyone do their own oil change after the 4 years warranty?
Just wondering any older Z owner do their own oil change!
Is it hard to do by yourself? Do I have to lift the car up and work from the bottom up to get the oil filter? Thanks for any advice! |

really easy to do it yourself. you need to get under to get to the drain, but the oil filter is at the top of the engine. just make sure you run the car to normal operating temp before you drain.

I do it every 5K. Super easy. Tools needed: 17mm socket for drain plug, oil filter cap wrench (I think it's an 81mm cap wrench, but I could be wrong). Take out the filter, drain the oil and replace the drain plug using a new crush washer (comes with the new filter), replace the 2 rubber O rings (comes with the new filter) on the filter cap, fill 'er back up.

Likely just too lazy, but no - not worth the trouble for the additional ~$30 labor. Drive in - 15 min later drive out with free car wash ($12 value). No trips to pick up/ drop off oil and no mess...

I'm doing the tranny and diff tomorrow. I just like getting my hands in there. There's fewer and fewer things you can do no cars today because they're so complicated. I'm happy to be able to do some basic maintenance.

Please tell me what mileage and how the tranny and diff fluids look like. I'm thinking of changing them later on as well.

I change the tranny and diff at 30K. I'm doing it on Friday, so I'll tell you how they look, but that's a pretty subjective assessment. You really have to do an oil analysis, but I just do it every 30K.

Engine oil is 7 quarts. The filter comes with a new crush washer and O rings.
manual tranny and diff are 1 quart each. The tranny oil is sold by BMW only in 5 quart jugs for $175! I used redline D4 ATF in the tranny and redline 75W-90 in the diff. Getting the oil out of the diff is a bitch cuz there's no drain plug. You have to get a suction gun and suck out all the oil. I managed to get a quart out but it wasn't easy. If anyone is going to do this I can tell you how to go about it.

Cool. You will also need an oil filter cap wrench. I forgot what size you need, but an auto parts store will have it.

I do my own ol changes now that the factory maintenance is over. Easy to do. Have to use jack and jack stands. A creeper is very useful. One bolt for the oil pan. drain into oil sump or pan then remove the ol filter from top under hood and replace gaskets that come with the kit. in all takes about 30 minutes with a beer in hand or 15 minutes without (working fast so that i can get beer in hand).

I've always done it lifting up the front end of the car. the drain plug is on the bottom of the pan, closest to the rear of the car. Putting the front wheels up on ramps will not affect how much oil is able to drain out.
the tricky part is getting the car on the ramps without scraping the lower edge of the bumper cover. I find it easier to lift the car by the center jacking point, then use jack stands at the jack points behind the front wheels. You won't be able to see the center jacking point because the car is too low. You will initially need a jack at one of the front jack points behind the front wheels (I use the jack from my 2006 BMW that actually came with a jack and spare tire!). Lifting the car up a bit will allow you to see the center jacking point.

Jparnes, have you run through warranty/included maintenance or are you doing more frequent oil changes than BMW will do?

The nose is a bit too close to the ground to get it on the ramps without scratching the bumper. I guess you could if you wanted to fool with a board or two to help with the incline, just too much for me to deal with and a 2x4 or something can easily slip off the pastic or metal ramps. so i just use a low profile, quick racheting jack. Sorta lke in NASCAR but a few extra pumps on the handle.

Hujan, I've read that the military bases all have lifts that can be rented hourly if you have a military ID (I think you know someone with ID that can work too)
http://navylifesw.com/sandiego/recreation/autohobbies/ Could be a good option. It also seems like a lot of P-car owners have lifts in the San Diego area. IMHO, it is always so much nicer to do gearbox and differential oil change with a lift. I have done this work in the past on my WRX on ramps and jackstands and that it was a pain to have to work the suction pump to remove the old oil |

I do more frequent maintenance. Motor oil @ 5K, diff and tranny @ 30K, brake fluid @ 1 year, coolant @ 2 years.

We just moved into a new place closer to Ramona and there is plenty of land for a standalone garage. Part of the deal with my wife for moving was that, when funds allow, we can build a dedicated garage with a lift. |
