License Plate bracket used in the US does not align with BMW bracket

very interesting experience i'd like to share and get your feedback on. After receiving my California license plates, (ching ching) I eagerly went to the rear plate but found the plastic mount plate had threads 6 mm x 20 with well mounted nuts used to attach the license plate. Unfortunately all license plates and frames sold by BMW or others in the US do not align with these holes requiring you to drill into the plastic of the mount bracket. What a joke. in fact, I find it hard to believe BMW does not offer a license plate frame that allows the license plate to sit within the frame then move the holes so you can mount the license plate using the threads from BMW. For all of you in the US, I bet you all have had to screw into your license plate plastic mount instead of using what BMW has provided. would like to hear from you on your experience

Two recessed screws hold the license mounting frame to the bumper cover. 2 - 4 self tapping screws (at the location from the license plate) hold the plate to the frame. I don't have a plate frame so maybe that is the difference, but I don't recall any dificulties 4 years ago. It hasn't fallen off yet.

Every new car I've bought in California, including BMWs, the dealers always installed paper dealer plates and their license plate frame so I guess it's just never been an issue for me. The only issue I have ever had is that my Z4 doesn't have any place at all to mount a front plate, not that I've really wanted one.

I agree never been an issue for me as well. in fact the dealer normally puts their plates frames on the vehicle and in most all cases they screw into a threaded hole. BMW in the US has you drill into the mount plate. crazy if you asked me doing something so cheap. I took off the mount plate to show the nuts located in the back of the mount plate. for many of you, this may sound like small peanuts but man am I surprised to see such a cheap way to mount a license plate in the US. See pic Holes on the left are from the screws made by drilling into the plastic. see how the designed threaded holes are not even used

The last couple of BMW I've had all have had to have either self tapping screws or drilled holes for the licence plates.
