Talk me out of it!

I'm considering purchasing a used 2009 Z4 3.5 with 15,000 miles (DCT). The high pressure fuel pump failed at 6,000 miles and was replaced. How likely is it that the fuel pump will fail again? Am I asking for long term problems with a 2009? The car is a CPO which helps and I know the fuel pump has an extended warranty on it's own. I'm trying to sell a 2011 128i and replacing it with a z4. Talk me out of it or into it!

It's unlikely that the HPFP replacement is the latest version because it was replaced in an "09 after just 6000 miles. You need to find out the part number of the one you have to make sure. The latest HPFP is the one that has remained trouble free. These are the ones that come in new 2011"s. According to realoem.com the current part number is 13517616170.

I have the service info on the car from BMW, the fuel pump was replaced in April 2010. I wonder if it is possible that the car got the new pump?

You need to know the part number. The dealership should be able to provide that.

I went through 4 fuel pumps on my 335i in 40k miles...All in all the car left me stranded more than a half dozen times which is why I went with the 3.0 in my Z4...

I had a 2009 Z4 3.5i ... high fuel pump was replaced and the software was updated. Was a nice car I loved it ...

I needed more room so I traded mine in ... like us to talk you out of it hmmm well in your 2011 128i you do have more room if you like to put your seat back here and then on long trips and take a cat nap well you will not be able to do it in a Z4

Other then that all is well ... oh one more thing make sure it does not have 19" Style 296 OEM wheels any other wheel is fine.

Good luck

The options list for the car does say 19 inch Alloy V Spoke wheels. Are these bad wheels?

Make sure it is NOT a 296 OME 19" wheel like the pic below. All others are fine.

Well I thought I had researched everything about this car but I guess not. Looks like the car does have these wheels. You mean an upgraded wheel is problematic! That stinks, I just read the thread on this forum. Looks like it would be a mistake to get a car with these wheels. For me, switching them out is not an option. Everything else about this car is perfect

How could switching wheels not be an option? Buy the car and then get yourself a set of good used OEM or aftermarket wheels. You can pick up the 18" 293 wheels for about $300 each.

No long term problems to think of.

If it does have the 296 wheels and there is no record of them cracking and being replaced after having been driven 15k miles, then perhaps they dropped off the assembly line as as a set of 4 good 296 wheels.
I don't have those wheels so cannot provide any personal input.

Would problems with the wheels show up on either the carfax or the service printout from BMW? Neither of these indicate anything went wrong with the car other than the fuel pump and one of the window motors. I actually did not think about getting a used set of wheels. I just wouldn't want to buy the car and then sink 3,000 or more into new wheels. Based on the post I quoted above, if the wheels are to go bad, does that problem tend to occur early in the life of the car? Quite honestly I am a female, love cars but don't drive crazy fast which it seems might be good for the life of the wheels

I do not know. Some others with 296 wheels should be able to answer.

It's not how fast you drive that matters. These are 19" wheels, meaning that there is very little rubber between the wheel and the road. Any low profile set up is more subject to wheel damage from pot holes, bumps, etc... BMW acknowledges this and warns about it.

or 296 wheels have 22k miles on them and no problems - BUT, we do not live in the city or a place with bad roads

The 296 wheel problem is often but not often enough, thats why probably BMW haven't recalled the wheels. I had a cracked 296 style wheel problem that hapened within 3 months of owning the vehicle (which i solved with around 30 euro's and 40 minutes of my time) and no sort of problem in any of the wheels after that (have the car since 09). Also two of the people i know personally that have Z4's with 296 style wheels haven't experienced such a problem driving in bumpy roads, yet. Probably cause the first thing they did when they got the car is to take my advice and switched from Run Flat tires to conventional.
My advice's for you:
-Ask if the car has injectors recalled (there are some issues with some N54 engines), if not check with the dealer the cars VIN to see if it need's injectors replacement (covered by BMW).
-Get rid of RFT, conventional tires give a much smoother ride and will decrease any chances of cracks on the BEAUTIFUL 296 style rims. AND make sure you maintain correct tire pressure cause if not it would destroy ANY rim.
-Get that car, drive safely and have fun! Honestly the E89 Z4 is one of the sexiest roadsters available. You wont regret it. In my opinion, people who complained about such sophisticated machines should have got a Miata instead and get over with it.

-C

Thanks for all the good advice. I am still interested in buying the car and it is still available. Hoping to get my 1 series sold soon. I think this z4 with extended maintenance plan and CPO is a great buy! LOVE the car and, yes, I'm a female!
