Hood Open sensor Adjustment?
On our way from America to Calif. yesterday, our hood open sensor lit up
on the dash. We had hit no big bumps and had not had the hood open recently. Is there an adjustment on our 2011 35i 6Spd that can be adjusted to prevent this? Also, the hood appears to lift just slightly at high speeds but we have never had the indicator light up before. I can see that the sensor is heavily spring loaded and gets pushed down as the hood latches secure the u-bolts extending from the hood. I do not know what type of sensors are used. Any info out there? Thanks, Mick

Have you tried just giving it a bit more firm closing? I had closed my hood recently with what I thought was enough force to properly latch it. As I started the car, I noticed the same thing with the hood not latched indication. I had to pop the hood again and give it a bit more firm closing. That took care of it.

This is interesting cause today on the highway, doing 120km/hour (70mph) I noticed a bit of hood flutter. Scared me a bit I have to say cause with a Jeep Wrangler, which has rubber closing clamps, this is normal. But a BMW?
So I pulled over at a gas station but all seemed closed properly. Wanted to check as well if there was a hood open warning light so, with a running engine in first gear pulled the latch in the cabin but nothing came on...? Final remark: I would not be able to close it by dropping it; the two pneumatic springs are too strong. So I just close it gently and then give it a final decisive push. |

found my switch
I found the hood latches in RealOem: 51237207225
Hood lock with micro switch, right Only the right side latch has a micro switch but I will have to remove he latch to access the switch. Further updates when I actually touch this hidden switch. Moving the U-bolts up one full turn seems to have fixed it for now. Mick

I've looked everywhere I know of for a N/O micro switch to replace the failed one in our right side hood latch (512237207225) to no avail. I ordered the latch asm yesterday from bmwofatlanticcity for $65 with free shipping. The only thing I was missing was the "hood open" alert in the dash and an alarm if the hood was opened while the car was parked with the alarm set.

Yes, it's a part number. Go to realoem.com and plug it in.
51 23 7 207 225 Why would you use google?

BMW part numbers are 11 digits, I don't know where the extra (2) came from.

Using realoem does nothing to actually locate and purchase a part. Different reasons to use different tools. Millennial or not.

Additionally, did you perform any sort of diagnose to validate that the issue is indeed on the switch prior to investing on the new latch? If so, can you share what and how (I am still learning the basics )? Let me thank you in advance on any insight you're able to provide. |

I had the same problem with my wife's Volvo. I used a paper lip to bridge the switch, fooling it into thinking the circuit was closed. No more warning, but of course, no ability to warn if the hood is unlatched. But really, it's not like the hood can open up unexpectedly and block your vision. Kinda pointless IMO.
