Any Z4 owners plan to buy Z5?

There's no such thing as a BMW Z5. The current make is the BMW Z4 second generation that ended production last August. In its place will be the 2019 (2018?) BMW Z4 Third generation.

Former Z4 owner (well, leased it) - can't wait for the new Z4! Unless something about the design really rubs me the wrong way, or if they don't have a color combination I like, I will probably get one as soon as I had a chance to test drive.

I don't understand the schedule - sounds like it will hit dealerships in October 2018, so that means custom ordered ones after first test drives will be delivered December or January. In the middle of winter (I am in Chicagoland). For a roadster????

If I can wait I may until January 2019 with ordering -- that should also provide some time for early adopters to find any issues and report them to the rest of the community.

I hope the laser etched seats will be available. I like the frozen orange of the concept; but I am also curious about the red that may (or may not) be available. Prefer a light interior, like white. Also a fan of two tone interiors to liven it up a bit - but not a fan of the yin yang interior of the concept, something a bit more conservative for me (white seats & carpet, black dash, for example).

Blind spot warning system should be standard given the switch to rag top (and supposedly larger blind spot).

No hard top, no sale. And I don't mean one you need to hoist off the car and store somewhere either.

Those 2 vents(?) on the side are comically large. The kidney grills are meh. The aggressive headlights are nice, but the front fascia in general looks like a monstrocity. Overall the car lacks the elegance and aesthetics of the E89. And has been stated thumbs down for soft top

Need we remind you that’s a prototype?

I dunno what you meant, but anyway it definitely won't be me, I actually prefer coupes, then if forced to have a convertible, hardtop. Rags are just old-school and not really a great wt savings in these days of better tech, never mind the other -ives.

Same here. Before my E89 I enjoyed convertibles as rentals when vacationing but I had zero interest in owning one myself. I don't like how softtops look when they're up, I hate the huge blind spots you get from the small side window openings, I don't like how they age, they're always noisier, have worse temperature insulation, etc, etc. But a nice folding hardtop? Best of both worlds.

Won't be buying\leasing either. I am a coupe guy and went for the e89 solely due to the hardtop with the convertible option replacing what, for me, would normally be a sunroof. No soft tops for me, ever. I love this car so maybe when my lease is up, I will look for a 2016 35is.

Ditto, and this is what I did. I started looking in the late spring and I found a 2016 that is loaded and I got what I feel was a great price on a hardly used car.

I always regretted selling my 2011 Z4 but it all worked out. I got a 08/2016 built Z4 35is. So I ended up with one of the last ones built.

Well said, the word grotesque and Honda Civic also come to mind. Some BMW bloodlines are needed. Their image has always been very tasteful and elegant even with the subtle 7 series. Hate the glitzy M.B type grill as well
I am confident that this was a publicity stunt. It got on the cover of a lot of car magazines. It has some nice basic lines and interesting ideas that have potential.
So will it go upmarket, stay the same or go a little downmarket like the E85 soft top. There is more potential and less competition a little down market. The MB roadsters all have hard tops now. In any event I will not be peering out from under a surrounding soft top.

x5 , no soft top for me.

That leaves us with what to replace our E89 ? The only foldable hard top in this range of the market is the SLK....

Any other suggestion ?

May just have to leave the Z4 community when it comes to replacing mine and go for this instead.
Don't get me wrong I love the open top motoring, and yes I know they do a tin-top version of the 4 series but it looks really odd with the roof down and two rear head-rests poking up

Plenty of toys, cup holders places to put stuff, MSport, XDrive etc what more could you want?

Agreed - a 4xx Coupe is a beautiful car...on the outside. However I can't stand the manual parking brake in 2017. The whole interior is showing its age, imho. Maybe the next gen will come with an e-parking brake and will be closer to the nice Audi interior. That would be an option, for sure.

My pre-emptive hunt for a Z4 replacement continues.... Yesterday I test drove a Porsche 718S. Very nice. Sadly, the (rear mid-) engine noise is particularly present in the cabin. This is a deal breaker: I drive monthly between Dallas and Houston and probably won't stand such a noisy car during 3h30min. Plus, it's a 4-cyl.

I read that Mercedes might axe the SLC replacement....
http://www.carscoops.com/2017/04/mer...axing-slc.html

Still on the list:
BMW: next gen Z4 if they offer a hard top, next gen 440i
Audi: S5, Audi TTRS when they offer memory seat (my wife and I share the cars).
Mercedes: SLC if not axed

Comments welcome

I still think people over-emphasize the hard top. I have been a fan of hard tops ever since I saw the first SLK with a folding hard top. I recall seeing it at some event, and people kept asking them to put it up/down - they had to limit it to once every 30 minutes due to battery - so people stood there, waiting. And that was before Internet on our cell phones, so the wait was really long & boring

Digressing. Let's be honest, the hard top looks absolutely great, but the execution had a couple of issues (noises, dancing windows, etc.). I for one will give the soft top a try. If they execute properly, it will be functionally better than the hard top ever was. Even if it doesn't look as great from the outside, it will hopefully still be a darn good looking car - and from the inside I may not care all that much.

Simple hard top or folding hard top ? I wouldn't mind a simple hard top as an accessory. Do you remember these ?

Folding... but yes, didn’t think of those. Should be relatively easy to make one for new Z4? I think they made something like this for my MX-5... or am I imagining that?

Yes, there were factory RHT (removable hard tops) for the first three generations of MX-5s, but those were never terribly popular and I doubt if any manufacturer would offer one today. Looks like the only way to get a next-gen Z4 with a tin roof is to shop at a Toyota store!
