No idea how good or bad they are -- must have picked the link up on the forum somewhere:

I still can't believe that BMW chooses to put such a huge antenna on these cars. Why not put in an antenna that is incorporated into the windshield? It's an eyesore, IMO.

Tried my local Citroen dealer with this part number and they said it had too many digits. In Oz at least the citroens and Peugeots only have 6 and 8 digit part numbers. They suggested I just go to a car sound shop where they have a wide range to pick from. I might try those next. Arghh.

The stubby antenna is for AM and AM reception tends to be terrible. The FM antenna is in the bumper, the nav is in the rear view mirror assembly (not 100% sure) and the satellite radio is on the bump on the 3rd brake light. My guess is, this is the best way they can get a good AM reception. With my stubby, I notice that I do get less than stellar AM reception but it doesn't bother me since I only use it when I listen to sports during NBA playoffs.

I forget who originally posted the attached file (sorry), but page 36 is very interesting as it shows the antenna locations. As everyone else here I 'knew' that the outside antenna was used for AM, but here it states that it is FM antenna 2.
I replaced my antenna with a stubby before I even left the dealer, so I have never done a comparison, but I have also never had any problem with FM reception probably because the other two FM antennae are more than sufficient. But it is funny how something we all 'know' is not always so |

Dr. Stig, see if they can confirm the length, if it's 2 1/2" (63.5mm) try the Citroen. Is there a big difference in price?

Ok, so I twist clockwise to tighten? My OEM antenna seems 'loose', there is a little 'give' even though I have tried to twist clockwise till I meet resistance...should I twist even harder? I'm afraid to break something.

Tighten it down click-by-click until it's tight. I just had a look at mine and it needs quite a force, but it will tighten up OK. Just don't keep undoing it as you will wear out these serrations. |
