Yeah, I dunno about you, but spending $1200 on dinner at Benu or Saison once a week isn't in the cards for me right now. Perhaps I should better my position in life. Until then, a one or sometimes two-star on a random weekday will suffice a few days a month. But I'm sure living in Tampa, you would have more experience in this department than someone in SF...

While I'm in agreement of the commercial sentiments behind Valentine's day, I did decide to do something this year. I was out for the entire week leading up to Valentines on a business trip. In addition, the wife has had a rough pregnancy and has had her hands full tending to our new daughter. I decided to get her out of the house and planned a dinner cruise. I also got her a spa package to de-stress.

She wasn't even planning on us going out that night but was pleasantly surprised....had the mother in law lined up to baby sit.

That's a very nice gesture and I'm sure she appreciated it greatly!

People seem to think it's the price tag of the gift, the dinner or the flowers are what matter. They absolutely don't. I've gotten my wife plenty of expensive things, but one of her favorites was this pair of ear rings I got her when I came back from a business trip. It was an out-of-the-blue gesture, and because it was at a random time and unexpected and because I went through the effort of picking it out myself, it made that is that more special.

You're an idiot for spending $1,200 on dinner. Take a little drive, and go find that "hole in the wall" romantic Italian spot that you took the effort to go check out before hand.

If you get down on V-Day good for you. Us peasants in Tampa don't subscribe. But I'm sure you're a far better person than I and know best because of SF.

You're a good man. I'm bet she was more than pleasantly surprised with your thoughtfulness.

+1 It's all about knowing what your mate likes. If she likes candy and flowers on V-Day, you should do that. If she likes you to put thought and effort into a random gift, you should do that. I do know this, (even though i don't live in SF ) ALL women want you to listen to them. And remembering to pick something up, or make reservations for, or buy tickets for, or plan to do something they mentioned in passing at some point in your relationship is always greatly appreciated.

NOPE. I'm crystal clear on the history, FC4. FYI, I consider Christmas and Easter Hallmark Holidays, too, because:

St. Valentines day, whether you like it or not, has become, like many others, a "hallmark holiday" in spite of the history behind it. And i'm not just talking about between coupes. All you have to do is scan a FB news feed to see how elaborate things have gotten, even on an elementary school level. It's ridiculous.
Looks like you have a problem inferring meaning from context and should take your ass back to school for a class in literature where they will teach that to you.

Drooling over other women at the gym, wanting to tell them all to be quiet, and now not getting her anything for Valentine's Day...

MATE what's going on over there?

Whoa Whoa whoa. First I wasn't drooling and did I mention that she looked like one of those girls in the workout videos doing squats and lunges... and second I try not to celebrate Valentine's day, she even said I didn't have to get her anything on Valentine's day which probably means that whatever she wants later down the road is gonna Break My Wallet. and third did I mention that the girl at the gym was built like the girls on the workout videos.
