Brake rotor wear

Has any one checked their brake rotors, my fronts appear to have deep grooves in them, about 50% starting from the outside, car has 5300 miles, has anyone else seen this.

Sounds pretty anomalous. I think an appointment & visit to the BMW service dept is in order

5200 miles and our left front rotor is the only one with any visible grooves. I may pull the pads on that caliper to see if there is a chunk of metal in that one pad.

My 35i has 5700 miles with all types of driving and all four rotors are smooth. Drop by your dealer and ask the SA about the wear. After all they warranty the rotors.

I pulled my left front caliper off yesterday to examine the brake pad. The outer pad had several chunks of iron embedded in it. That iron is what was causing the grooves.
Rotor:

Outer Pad:

I dug the iron out of the friction material and sanded the pad flat again.
After:

You can see some damage to the pad. I'm assuming someone at the factory was having a bad day and they were a little sloppy installing this caliper.

I agree on the installation part of it... has your car ever had a brake job done since delivery? I guess it is past warranty now?

A brake job? at 5,200 miles???? It's got almost a full 4 years of warranty left.
Our other Bimmer goes about 50K between brake jobs.

since i did this post i still have not taken it back, is this a cause for concern, is the braking affected, feels ok, but its not right, i am sure BMW would have to replace the pads, and rotors, or maybe they could be surfaced.

No need to worry, your braking will not be affected. It looks ugly but there is a LOT of metal in these rotors. The small grooves actually increase your swept surface.
When you take it in for it's first service, mention it to your service advisor if you have one. They may just note it and tell you to live with it.
The cause may be some contaminated brake pads from the BMW supplier. JURID may have had some lapse in their quality control.

Sorry, I saw the 1997 and assumed a 4 year old car, you mentioned no milage and no other details.

This is what my post was based upon===> Drives: '97 Z3,'11 Z4 35i,'90 C4 Vette I did not realize it was your 2011.

I guess it's an easy mistake if you only read one message and reply.
