Anyone Had their HPFP Recall Accomplished?
Got my letter from BMW on the HPFP recall for my 2010 Z4. Was curious if anyone had gone in and been "serviced" and what acutally gets done. Was curious if it was an automatic replacement of the HPFP - or if some instances they were able to check parts configuration and do something different. I still have my original HPFP (but my wife's 2010 335 did fail and was replaced).
Thought it was interesting that BMW's letter made it out as if it was an environmental issue instead of a mechanical reliability one. I have the Dinan 2 software. Would like to know if for anyone who has gone through the warranty work - did they modify your engine software? My local (San Antonio) dealer was not a Dinan location so I went 50 miles up the road to Austin and may have to do the same again, but would like to avoid that if possible. Thanks for any intell or gotchas. |

I got my letter today. Service is scheduled for next week.
Part of the letter states Quote "BMW will repair your vehicle free of charge for parts and labour. Based on the individual service history of the vehicle, your authorized BMW retailer will inspect and replace (if required) the high-pressure fuel pump (including the low pressure fuel sensor) and / or will reprogram your vehicle's engine control unit. The complete repair may take approximately one day." End Quote Based on this I guess there are three options the way I see it; inspect, replace or reprogram. I will know next week after the work has been done what work was actually done to my car. So far after 28,000 KM (17,400 Miles) I have not experienced any HPFP or starting problems. Yes the letter does mention that failing to do this inspection may result that the car may not pass the emission test required by the Province of Ontario where I live. I will find out next week exactly what that has to do with the mechanical operation of the HPFP or the functionality of a fuel sensor. PS Perhaps we should use this thread to report what was actually done that be I will once I know next week.

I was offered to do the recall when I went for an oil change. I refused.
I'll wait until I hear positive feedback (or the pump fails!)

My letter states ... Quote "Your obligations are... At your earliest convenience, please contact your authorized BMW retailer to schedule an appointment to have this Emissions Recall Campaign performed". it states further ... "If you fail to get this free Emissions Recall Campaign performed ... If you live in a province with an emissions testing program, your vehicle must pass an emissions test, as required by provincial law. Without having this Recall performed, your vehicle may be less likely to pass this test. Failure to have this free work performed could be determined as lack of proper maintenance of your vehicle and could jeopardize your full protection under the emissions warranty provisions" End of Quote Again I question what all this has to do with the HPFP mechanical operation. When you do get your letter it might use different wording all depending on requirements in the area of your residence. In any case, I recommend to read the letter and have it done to avoid complications later on.

I haven't got the letter yet but my service history shows it as being required
and my Dinan guy says he'll just reflash it (the BMW dealer is the Dinan sales point) It's not going to happen until late March or April when I re-insure the car and bring it out of hibernation.

Smart move. I'm not convinced BMW has a real fix. I think they are on HPFP #4 or 5.

http://www.bimmerpost.com/2011/01/05/the-end-of-the-hpfp-fuel-pump-saga/ The MTBF rate of the previous pump, 1351 7 613 933 has been relatively low. Hopefully the BMW engineers have finally fortified the mechanism to everyones satisfaction. BMW HPFP's and other BMW moving mechanisms will continue to fail from time to time. You know you have to practically rebuild the cooling system on the M54's at 90K+ miles, belt tensioning pullys, soft gaskets that get brittle over time and leak, vanos seals, etc. Now I'm really going to date myself and tell you how I remeber when you practically had to rebuild the US engines at 30-40K miles because it was worn out. Times change, we expect more, but nothing lasts forever. I'm enjoying the heck out of my N54 while its running.

I went through this before in an E93. It had a need-to-have software update to handle some throttle-response issues that affected everyone, Dinan or no. The Dinan reflash was no-charge. |

Think I'll hold off for couple months. Such a hassle to have a Dinan reflash after. At that point I might as well move up to Stage 3.

What does your Service Invoice say? Did they inspect, replace or reprogram?
It would be good to know. Thanks. Cheers, Rolf-Dieter

For example I encountered a BMW Dealer in the US where I was stuck (on my 2010 vacation trip) with 2 cracked wheels that was capable of .... A) Selling high end BMW cars (one in the showroom was over $100K) B) Drive your car into the service bay and check your tire pressure. C) Take wheel info of the cracked wheel. D) Order a new wheel for me. E) Then direct me to a tire shop to change out the wheel (since they don't invest in a tire machine LOL). F) They never bothered to check the other rear wheel it was done in the tire shop after I ask for the rest of the wheels to be checked for cracks. Some BMW Dealership ... so be on guard is all I can say.

My invoice is not very detailed for HPFP. I went for another issue initially: the usual roof rattle & the description of the fix is half a page ! However for the HPFP, it's 1 line They replaced the pump with a new one.
