Why do people call the Z4 a chick car?

Every non-BMW owner car enthusiast i've talked to thinks the Z4 is a chick car. I really don't understand this perception. I realize the Z4 was designed by women, but I think they did a wonderful job with it. The style is very sharp and aggressive, and the Z4 to me is the epitome of drop top motoring. Such a fun roadster, I sometimes wish I could trade my e93 for one if it wasnt for the loss of practicality. Thoughts?

If it were a "chick car", I imagine that it would have a larger / more useful trunk for all of the shopping bags & whatnot.

What they meant to say is "chick magnet"...
Joke aside, a roadster in my opinion is a good example of a true mans car in many levels. Especially with the aggressive looks and performance specs of the E89. VW beetle? Now THATS a chicks car.

Two reasons, a) it looks pretty and b) the top comes down. Therefore a girls car in some peoples eyes.

+1

I suggest we do not make a detailed thread out of this topic. It is a chick car because girls also like the car. And just because chicks like bunnies and beetles, it does not mean they only like things pink, small and cute.

Yeah some people confuse the old and new Z4. Here in China I think most of the old Z4s are driven by girls, whereas the new one is driven by couples or men. Not sure why... The X6 is also known as a mistress car for some reason...

I think it is just jealousy ... big time ... they need to voice there negative thoughts and feelings since they can not afford one or the wife would never tolerate it ... when I drove my Z4s' I simply ignored it and enjoyed my car

I don't mind discussing this topic. I've never understood what ppl mean by saying that a car is a "chick car"...that many drivers of it are female? That the car looks effeminate? In any event, females generally have better taste than males, so I don't mind that tag at all.

That being said, there's nothing effeminate about the Z4: the front is bunched down and aggressive, ready to pounce, the profile has stylish lines but nothing like a VW Beetle (if one wishes to be stereotypical about smooth, roundish designs) and the rear looks tight as well. Overall, not as brutish/aggressive as the E85, but still very much a serious-looking, meant-for-business type of car.

I think some people believe that the e89 is a chick car because it's more about style than driving pleasure.

I drive my Z4 because I like the looks and the way it drives. Can't really care about what some people say, they will probably have their reasons for it...

That's only partially true because our Z4 is just too damn good-looking. It's hard to have the performance to match up to its looks. That being said, the car's internals do a great job and is no slouch at all. The steering could have been tighter, the car could have been lighter, but generally-speaking, it's a very capable car that one can drive and handle extremely fast in the real world w/ great confidence.

1) Why would I care what someone else thinks about my car, positive or negative, as long as I like my car?

2) In what possible way is it bad for a car to be a "chick car"?

Chick Car???

The chick car moniker doesn’t bother me in the least. I have a Z4, SLK and Miata. They could all be considered a chick car, I guess. They are all great to drive, but each in a different way. The Z4 35i is great because, well you know……… The SLK is nice for touring and has a decent ride. The Miata is a ball because you can beat the crap out of it and not get in to much trouble. Besides most of the chick car comments come from friends driving mini-vans!!! Moreover, I have a Harley and a Ford 350 Super Duty diesel 4x4 pickup which eliminates any questing of my femininity. Long live the Chick Cars.

I think a lot of people remember the original Z3 and assume the 4 is a chick car. Yeah the SLK is a chick car. The IS exhaust is definitely not a chick exhaust.

SLK55 AMG is tough to call a chick car.
