Wind Deflector Installation Instructions
Recently ordered and took delivery from my BMW dealer all needed components for installing wind deflector on my E89, which includes new roll bar covers, screen inserts for roll bars, mounting brackets for wind screen, and folding wind screen that attaches between the roll bars. Dealer has not been able to provide installation documentation for the E89, could only locate instructions for E85, which is considerably different. Does anyone have the documentation for E89 installation that they could share?

I would advise NOT to try and install the deflector in an E89. See posts on bimmerfest. I recall reading that you can easily screw up the covers on the roll bars. What does your dealer want to do the install?

The wind screen kit comes with replacemnt roll bar covers, as it is expected that some of the clips will break when removing existing covers. Dealer did not quote installation cost, suggesting it to be an easy intall that can be handled by the owner, they just haven't been able to produce the installation instructions yet.

Installation Instructions In Hand
Finally got hold of instructions for installing the wind deflector. Purchased components from my BMW dealer's parts/service department, but they were unable to provide installation documentation. Contacted BMW NA Technical Support and was told only their dealers have access to this information, so sent me back to my dealership. They then came up with instructions for the E85, that I already had, which is quite different from the E89. Next went to BMW NA Customer Relations, again told they don't have access to this material, suggesting I try another dealer's parts/service group. Well I found someone at another dealer who was willing to research and seek out needed documentation. Doesn't look too difficult, not as complicated as the E85's. Am including copy here for others who might want to install themselves.

Have quite a bit going on over next few weeks, so probably won't get after installing until sometime first of year, but will update all on how it goes.

When I bought mine, the parts guys at my dealership installed it for me because they had never done one before. It took about 20 minutes and they gave me my old roll hoops in perfect condition.

I installed mine today and it took only about 10 minutes. I just pulled the silver back part off (used a large screwdriver to pry it off), put in the screen and snapped on the new silver back piece. I didn't need to replace the front black part as it is screwed onto the bar so I am going to see if I can return them. The dealer wanted over $200 to install it and it turned out to be one of the easiest things I have ever done.
As for the effectiveness of it, I took it for a spin with the windows both down and up and although it cut down on some of the wind, it is still quite breezy inside. To be fair, it was a little windy today so I am going to try again on a calm day and see what it's like. |

I got the kit from the dealer, but they only gave me the windscreen kit(main one and two little ones for the roll hoops) and the front black hoops, not the silver ones. They said the silver ones are not needed.

The silver ones have holes in them so you can attach the guides for the center deflector. I was given both the silver and the black pieces but the silver ones are the only ones that are different from what I already have.

Ok - Here is what the Dealer gave me:
part # 54-34-7-200-808 - Wind Deflector part # 51-43-9-128-412 - Cover, Rollover bar part # 51-43-9-128-411 - Cover, Rollover bar The two cover rollover bar part boxes just had the black portion of the rollover, not the silver. Is there a separate part number for silver, or did they short me parts? Thanks for any insight.

You are missing the silver ones.
Left is part #51 43 9 181 607 right is part #51 43 9 181 608 I don't see why they even include the black ones as they are not needed in my opinion. I guess if you are rough with the old ones, perhaps you can snap a clip off in it or something. |

Thank you for the response, guys. What is interesting is if you look at the .pdf which has the instructions that BarrowJon posted, it states on page 2 that you need additional parts 51-43-9-128-411 and 51-43-9-128-412 (the black portions) but no mention at all of needing the silver portion. I wonder if it is a typo on the instruction sheet?

I would say that it is a typo. All I needed was the silver backs in order to do the install. The silver ones are snapped into the black ones which are screwed onto the roll bar. You could replace all 4 pieces but I didn't see the point as the silver ones have the needed holes for the guides and the black front part was in perfect condition.

Question please to 2bmws4me who seems to be the only one with direct experience with the current Z4 deflector kit - please confirm this kit for the new Z4s does not include any special mounting for the trunk like the older Z4s - wonder if when stowed it fits OK into trunk underneath the hardtop when the hardtop is down?
