E89 not selling as well as E85/E86?

I stumbled upon this page:

http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2011/01...s-figures.html

Seems like E85/E86 was selling at 3x the volume as the E89? I wonder why that is.

Re:

The current global economic downturn would have a lot to do with it i'm sure.

You can clearly see that 2008 was 1/2 the year before and the E89 wasn't even out then but just so happens that year (2008) was meltdown around the western world.

The price isnt as pretty as before either. Before, you can buy a Z4MC fully loaded for about 50K. Now a 35is is 75K and its not even an M car

+1

in the older model the 3.0si started low $40s and now the sDrive28i is high $40s for less power.

I know that if I didn't get 14% off MSRP plus great leasing terms there was no way I would have gotten an E89 z4. Even within the BMW lineup I would either have gotten 135/335 (same performance but lower MSRP) or M3 (more performance same MSRP).

But Z4 35i for roughly same cost as 135/335 then heck yea sign me up.

The e89 went upscale: better car, higher price, lower demand, less units sold, better for e89 resale.

But... not as good looking E93 335i just doesn't look right to me for some reason.

I was thinking more along the lines of F30 335 M sport but yea, agreed E89 is a nice looking car.

It doesn't handle as well as my previous z4mc

I sold my 07 z4mc about half a year ago for 34k. 5 years and it only lost 16k in value. thats gonna be hard for the e89 to match

So I think these are more or less the average US sales numbers:

3-series: 275/day.
7-series: 30/day
Z4: 10/day
1M: 2/day (one year limited production)
M3 lime rock: 0.5/day (one year limited production)

Dare we conclude that the Z4-model, the most beautiful BMW currently on offer, is also the most limited production model of the current non-limited production BMW models? It seems even the 6-series is selling better this year...

Let us not compare cars with all-year low-profile run-flats to cars with track-ready sports tires...

In fact, the handling of the Z4MC is probably only better until it starts raining/snowing. Or until you get a flat tire. But more importantly, over-steer is easier and more fun with less grippy tires!

With similar tires I am also quiet confident the new Z4 is more comfortable than the old Z4 don't you think?

If a car is more comfortable and fun, how can it have worse handling? Everyone also says the Boxter has the best handling in its class. But even if its better, is it more fun? The Z4 is easier to over-steer. It has more torque, less grip and is front-engined. I don't think I would dare to drive a center-engined car the way I drive my Z4. To me this means better handling, because what matters to me is fun, not lap times.

Accidentally put those swirls there instead of on the plate. My car was originally from texas. Moved to GA and now sold to CA. It has been across country lol

it is a practical issue too - only two seats for $65k+; in the "new" economy this is hard to justify. our e89 is the 3rd car - we call it our "date" car and that seems really appropriate since we did ED a couple of summers ago

I'm doing my part to boost sales

Just traded my 2011 Space Gray sDrive 35i M Sport on a 2013 Melbourne Red sDrive 35is. Power increase is noticeable and the paddles on the steering wheels are now correct, right up and left down. Awesome every day car! The torque is unbelievable. I'm happy it's a low volume car, much more distinctive. I don't use this forum too much but I thought this is a good subject.

To be fair, the E85/86 are two seaters too. What exactly is "ED"? I assume it's not Erectile Dysfunction, which is the only word expansion that came to mind

Have you taken the lousy runflats off and replaced them with a set of proper performance tires ?

It depreciated 16k from the purchase price or the MSRP?

Back in 2005, I purchased a new 2005 350Z Roadster for $35k and sold it 20 months later for $31k. Sometimes you make out like a bandit.

For the paddles, Left side down, right side up, seems cumbersome to me.

The "push downshift, pull upshift" on either side in my 35i seem correct and convenient.

If I am in the middle of a hard 90 degree turn and my right hand is crossed over my body to the left and I need to shift, EITHER UP OR DOWN, I can do so with my right hand.

In the same situation with the "left side down, right side up" set up, you would only be able to shift up with your right hand. To shift down, you'd have to cross your left arm over or under your right arm to get to the left side paddle which is now on the right since the wheel has been turned. That seems awkward.

Plus, one can use the "pull up, push down" system as a "left side down, right side up" system if desired. All you have to do is not use the other function on each paddle.

So, this begs the question... What benefit was gained by switching to a "left side down, right side up" set up?
