Are these signs of HPFP failure?
Hello,
Last weekend, I had the pleasure of driving my brother's 2012 Z4 35i again while he was away. He has around 25k miles on his car and it's bone stock. I noticed a high pitched noise right when I was going to park the car. Today, he mentioned that the car had difficulty starting (both on the way to work and from work). I drove the car again just now and it had a bit of a hard time starting but couldn't notice the high pitched whine. Could this be the HPFP on its way failing? No warning lights (yellow, red, or otherwise) appeared on the instrument cluster. P.S. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to the inner workings of a car. I'm the type who just likes enjoying the cars and the roads (legally). I tried searching for this topic but these topics seem to provide an "up in the air" answer for me. Some say fuel, some say turbo, some say HPFP, some say etc. etc. etc. Sorry about asking this if it has been brought up before. |

I have similar noise over 5 months, and longer crank. It got worse in these days. The bad thing about it is it does not give any trouble code. I had done bunch of research about this and it is probably HPFP. I'll just take my chance and raplace it this month, let you know if the problem solved or not.

long cranks
I was getting similar long cranks in my 2012 35is. It finally started throwing codes indicating misfires, so they replaced all of the fuel injectors under warranty and now it runs much better. If you're not under warranty, I think I would try a bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank first.

I had this same problem, with the long crank before start, BMW replaced the fuel injectors for me and now its gone. They also wanted to do a walnut blast on my intake valves for $1000, I said no, The tool is less than $300, that's my next purchase, seems an easy fix, just will take a few hours

I took my brother's car (since I'm free) to my local stealership. They brushed off my concern about the long cranking start ups. Perhaps it was due to my explanation that I said the car felt like it was about to "stall" midway through starting. That's exactly what happened when I started the car in the morning on the way to the dealer.
Secondly, the whining noise did appear but it was much weaker than usual. So I wasted my time and was sent home...I was, in not so many words, told to hope that a code/warning is thrown. |

I have a loud whining noise when I start my car. It's noticeable for about 10-15 minutes after start... then it sort of disappears. It's probably a fuel pump. But until it fails, I dont really care. My dealer here isn't the greatest. - it's a lease.

Hi
Got the HPFP replaced few weeks ago. My car 09 35i has aprox 39000miles on the clock. No specific long cranks but after start the rpm was dropping fast, no smooth decrease. And the engine started bucking and almost stalled (like jitenmazee’s video). The two last times there was fault codes . With the new pump the rpm decrease very smooth from 1500rpm+ to idle. |

Known Issue
Just googled bmw hpfp. Looks like a recall was done and warrantee extended , or does everyone already know that? New pumps were installed and reprogrammed.
