help: 19" or 20"???

hi guys,

i am seeking for new wheels but i am not sure what to go for.

19" or 20"?

i saw T89's car with the hartge wheels. but as this is not really the type of wheels i like i do not know what to do.

i like rims with big lip. the question is if i go for 19" will i regret it or will i regret if i go for 20" as it is not confortable and MUCH mpre expensive.

there is also the legal issue that in austria you are not allowed to run 20". with the 19" this problem will not exist.

i am glad about every opinion and maybe also pix or whateva...

thank you!!

Personally I think 20's look too big. Perportions don't seem correct.

Mmmm.

20" = breaking the law = uncomfortable = expensive
19" = legal = relatively comfortable = cheaper

Can't see a problem really.
19" wheels (especially the 326Ms) can look ab fab.

The "need an extra inch" philosophy doesn't get much cred in my world...

How do 20" wheels break the law? Is there a special law in Australia that discourages bigger wheels? Bigger wheels do not mean bigger diameter overall because you are running one profile lower on tires.

Here's what 20" wheels look on my Z4.

Here's what 20" wheels look on my Z4.

well this is a long story.

every change that you do on your bimmer you have to declare at the TÜV. that means. if you want to put bigger wheels this wheels need to be TÜV approved. that means they need to be examined by the TÜV to be "safe".

if the rims provide this TÜV certificate you need to mount the wheels on the car and to pay a visit @ TÜV.

they undergo examination whether the car rubs or not and you have enough space to run the wheels.

they load your car with 300 kg weight in the trunk and drive a few rounds. if it rubs you need to undertake the changes not to rub.

this costs 300 euros to get this TÜV certificate for the wheels on YOUR specific car.

with this certificate you go to a state owned institution which examines if this safety is provided. and then you are clear to run the wheels.

but as i said the condition is that the wheels are TÜV approved.

all american wheels for example are not. as a result it is illegal to run these wheels in general.

it is very complicated and stupid. the austrian state simply does not like modded cars. it is pointless and that's why they introduced stric rules.

same is in germany but not that strict.

hope everyone understood. if you have questions about that stupid system, do not hesitate.

@ lewis: i know your car. you have all my respect. it is siiiick!! congrats on that.

AUSTRIA, not AUSTR-AL-IA!

Geeez.

Nearly 200 countries on this planet. Almost all of them outside of the USA.

I think in fairness to Lewis it was a simple mistake. I wasn't aware until recently that some European countries had such restrictive laws. If you look at his location you note that he's out of Hong Kong and Vancouver, BC Canada and not the US.

As a kid, I loved the exotic cars of the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's, the greatest of which IMHO where the Italian and then the German makes - who couldn't love a Dino, Monza or a Gullwing SL? Then there's the crazy ass Road Warrior tearing up the asphalt Down Under. Growing up on the North American Continent with hot rods one just assumes the rest of the world is wide open as well.

Thanks TeagueAMX.

The country jibe was a quote from a comedian... Cant remember who it was.

Thought I would add some irony into the mix by lumping Canada into the US as the 51st state....

Geez, how do you like riding like what? 2 inches (5cm) of rubber? These are not RFTs are they? You probably don't need any air in them.

Sigh....

19" at the most. My humble opinion.

Silver-Bolt - love the picture, although I just stopped throwing up after seeing it. I can't think of a more horrifying picture of a Bimmer than that green monstrosity with the wheels from the 'hood. Thanks again for showing us something completely different.

The black 35is with the hartge wheels I posted isn't mine. Hartge dealer was selling it here in Switzerland.
IMO 20"s would look good if you go with the exact set up as the hartge one otherwise I would stick with 19". Best compromised on looks and comfort.

I have 19 inch, I do agree 20 inch would be too big and perhaps will lead to problems. My recommendation would be to stick with 19 inch.

I have to laugh out loud here when I reflect back to one of the Jay Leno shows. He had his normal Monday evening question session on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and some other street. The question was ....

What are the neighbors of the USA ?

Some fellow came back and said "Europe to the north of us and Australia to the south of us" I still as I said have to laugh about it when I think back.
