ok...
the auto gearbox is a customer choose.
the gear lever design is a bmw choose.
if you don t like the auto gear lever that bmw produces for z4s, here you have an DIY instruction to change that and get a different designed lever, always from bmw.
it's just that.I thought firstly it was a mod of intyerest.sorry.

It looks like some special finish that BMW charges as an option for other models like the 7 series that includes the iDrive knob. I forget what it was called. But, that would be something I'd like to replace my DCT shifter someday with the metal-like finish.

Don't apologize.

Some forums are interested in doing mods, but others are not.

The thing I found interesting is how the guy managed to duplicate the LED activity lights. The overall install was rather clever.

Not if you look at the YouTube video. The shifter is not stable in it's base and the park button and "release" button don't work.

it looks like you are looking at a lot of people spending too much time playing with their knobs...at least in Italy this is not legal.....

just kidding....

anyway I thought this mod useful cause:
1 I don't like auto gearbox, and i think also someone here dislikes auto gearbox on a car like z4, imhaso(in my honest and stupid opinion,my brand new abbreviation)

2 I think that there's a huge design gap between common auto gearbox lever and DCT lever(auto gearbox one seems to be designed in half a minute) so i thought it was useful to look at it to improve design....

regards,
Francesco

Lets face it, if you like the look of a high tech knob, then the DCT one is the cats meow!

If only the gear change buttons on the tiller were as good.
Mine make a horrible double click action that I find annoying... Certainly not up to the high quality found elsewhere on the Zed...

And the dealer tells me they are all that way (and all the ones I have tried are - dammit)

Even before I ordered my Z4 I didn't like the standard selector knob and tried to find a solution to put the DCT-knob on the Steptronic. I wanted it to look exactly like the DCT (the complete set with the cover, not just the knob itself), honestly I don't like the result shown above. There are actually some models (5-series and 6-series) the have the same Steptronic as in the Z4 but in combination with the DCT-knob. It could/should work but I didn't find anybody to do the transformation at the time.

Than, a while ago, I saw the one from the Performance serie but they were only available for the 3-series and the 1-series, but you can order the whole set (knob and cover) or only the knob itself. Asked my dealer if he could order it for me to try it on my Z4 and if it didn't work that he would take it back.
It worked and it really looks great... I am very pleased with it.

This is the one I have...(that's not a picture of my car, I believe it's actually a 1-series)

Grtzzzz
