Advice Needed

Shortly after I signed for my F80 I switched insurance, and they gave me a device to monitor my driving for 90 days. The discount is up to 30%, 5% minimum just for participating, and I'm really trying to drive that thing into the ground. I can't seem to get that last 2%. Tips appreciated.

You will get screwed by this, sooner or later.
Every car club guy I know who tried, ditched it, as their rates got jacked up, not of elusive and unattainable discounts.

Your rapid accelerations and hard braking are giving them exactly what they need in the form of hard data to give you a minimal discount.

Ditch the "snapshot" now because it's not worth it and you invited them to watch you drive your car, hard.

You have to drive it like is a 320i in eco pro mode to not get the hard acceleration flag, and have to brake really gently

I've heard its best if you can drive your car during times of low traffic so you can manage your driving style really closely

I'm secretly hoping there's an over/under bet going at the underwriters offices on how many rapid accel events I can collect (115/2weeks not bad eh?). I'm going to try my best to heavily favor those that bet "over".

# of miles driven is probably not helping either given the more time on the road translates into a higher likelihood of an accident your fault or not.. that's pretty much 20,000 miles/year.. i can't see this device helping anyone lower their insurance rates unless they're already a really conservative driver... you should do a top speed run and see what happens to your discount

More night driving...and try it without your headlights on. I wonder if they can track that.

Your ratio of acceleration to braking seems high...each hard acceleration event should be accompanied by a hard braking event! Try to even that out.

I wonder if this tracker OP installed would affect the rates of other m3/4 owners.

I would say it would as this provides them another way to collect and evaluate.

Please stop using it when you are driving a car like this.

Side question, do you also allow your significant other (if you have one) to install tracking app on your phone?

It's piece of shit. I tried it for 3 weeks. Hated every second of it. It's like pretending to drive a Ford Focus and it will beep everytime you hit brake.

It actually makes you paranoid to maintain distance that I felt I was actually gonna have an accident just because I was careful about hard braking.

Forget about doing a burnout. I hit hardbrake 26 times in 30 seconds. Wonder how that happened!?

Break into the track between 12am and 4am. They will all have strokes when they see the data.

Some paranoid people here. I tried it for shits and giggles since I was going to be out of town quite a bit and wouldn't even be driving anyway so I figured I'd project the notion of not driving much to see if I got a discount.

You keep the snapshot in for six weeks then ship it back to them. As others have noted, the hard braking and acceleration kills you, you have to basically drive it like a grandmother which I didn't do. Driving it late at night also dinged you but I never did that.

I didn't get a discount but my rates never went up because of it either.

I wouldn't consider it paranoia when this real-time tracking data could potentially be used against you. Why give up your privacy for the possibility of a discount? Data is valuable and these programs are nothing more than data mining operations to learn more about individual driver habits and possibly even habits among specific vehicle types. At some point, this data will be used to set rates accordingly.
