High pitch sound fuel pump.

Today when I entered my garage, a high pitch sound took my attention.

The sound is coming from the rear. So I guess it's the fuel pump. I know the sound of a fuel pump, but since today the sound of my 30i is very noticeable (top down).

Is this a sign of a dying fuel pump? Thanks...

I hear a whining too, however I think it is the transmission. seems like if I'm in 4th gear for example and i let off the gas and coast in gear I get a pronounced transmission whine...or could be the fuel pump...who knows...have only owned 2 bimmers and only since august of last yr...no such sound from my e90.

Could it be the efficient dynamics thing, where the engine braking is charging the battery?

hmm, man...all this new stuff kinda flys in the face of conventional car wisdom i suppose. sounds and little nuances that in past years could have been an indicator of significant problems are now actually sounds you want to hear? and who knows, maybe not...its all so new. argh! shoulda bought a lotus for the minimalist in me...naw...

I posted on the "fuel pump whine" a few weeks ago. Glad to hear that it's not just me. It definitely sounds like a pump, coming from the rear passenger side of the car. It's very noticeable for me with the top down and inside of the garage.

Love to see if this is a consistent sound and nothing to worry about - or if there is a bad batch of pumps for a batch of 2009s.

Hi guys,

I also get that sound on my Z4 30i. Its not a contstant whirr, but randomly coming on from time to time.

And no, its not the brake energy thing, because I notice it mostly on idle when parked.

I'm going to contact my (presumably clueless) dealer about it.

I noticed this whining noise today. The weather is getting cooler here so maybe it is temperature related? Anyone figure out what is causing it and if it needs fixed or not?

I don't think its a temperature issue. My car had the whine all over the summer.
Have yet to ask the dealer about it...

Exclamation Fuel pump

Hi, I have been searching for other Z owners that have fuel pump problems. I have a 2005, it started making a loud noise when it had 900 miles on, so far I have had 3 fuel pumps installed but its been to the service dept about 20 times for the fuel pump. Only one problem, if they can't duplicate it, they don't fix it. I read that 2003 & 2004 were recalled for fuel pump problems, they said the car would stall & couldn't restart it for 15 - 20 minutes. So they finally put a recall out on it, that's a safety issue. For those of you who have a problem, keep documentation on you trips to the service dept. I'm so disgusted with my Z & the problems I've had, I really haven't been able to enjoy it. Thanks & good luck.

Wow, sorry to hear about your problems!
I don't think the E89 has a bad 'fuel pump problem', its just an annoying sound.
I'm sure the sound can be deadened by isolating it from the body/frame, wherever it sits.

I have had 4 or 5 long engine cranking issues on my 2009 Z4 3.5i in the last week. I hope it's not the fuel pump, but I think this is normally an early sign of a failing fuel pump. I thought that BMW would have resolved the whole N54 fuel pump problems by now.

The OP and I have a Z4 30i, so no HPFP. The 30i is the same engine as the 328i in the US.

Hope you get it sorted!

I've been reading the extensive thread over on the 3 series forum concerning the hpfp, which I understand is related to the n54 3.0l tt engine. Guys over there indicate they continue to have hpfp issues and software/wastegate/lag issues.

I've wondered if we will see the same problem with the 35i's?

WOW Twin Turbo, I hope you get your problem fixed soon. What fuel pump is in my 2005? I've read about the N54 & people already having problems. Other than that, how do you like the new Z? Being nosey, but did you buy or lease?

Dante, what year is yours?

Thanks. Not sure about the fuel pump in your car.

I bought my Z4. There were no good lease offers when I purchased. I did get 3.9% APR through BMW Financial. I love the car, just hope no HPFP problems. I hate going to the dealer, besides the trouble of having to remove tuning mods. I never had any trouble with my 2007 335i with N54 so I guess I have been lucky up till now.

Please, don't mix up the High Pressure Fuel Pump problems on the direct injection N54 (Z4 Sdrive 35i) with the normal fuel pump on the non direct injection engines in 23i and 30i. I think were comparing oranges to apples.

Fuel Pump

I have an 09 Z4 3.5 and the car went into limp home mode. It was the HPFP. The dealer told me this is an issue with the twin turbo.
