True. Good that the club isn't involved in motorcycle events.
They suck, they know it and they're arrogantly proud of it. Harsh language, hope I didn't offend while releasing frustrations.

z4z4z4's pic I think is a good illustration of that plane going from top of suspension to top of roll hoops. I can't get that clearance no matter how I sit and I think from that pic z4z4z4 doesn't have it either

I wondered why that plane mattered and not just the broomstick test and got my answer / reminder from one of our older threads where a Z4M coupe rolled

YIKES!!! That is serious evidence to make you think twice.

Cobra owners, please don't try to enter any cca events!
Your forehead penatrates the plane from your long hood/roadster configuration suspension to the top of your roll bar.

The liability problem isn't because of the participant's danger. It's due to the fact that BMW CCA requires a PASSENGER as an instructor. Most of the other organizations that do not require any instructors to ride passenger probably don't care if you roll over and incur serious damage, because, frankly, if they're lawyer is worth a damn, you should have signed your life away when you entered the premises.

However, since BMW CCA REQUIRE that all their track events that an instructor be available to all participant whenever they're on track, it means when sh*t does hit the fan, they're fully and 100% liable for the damage to the instructor in the car, riding as a passenger. Imagine a roll over accident involving an instructor in the passenger seat, and if said instructor were to get HURT. There'll be no end to BMW CCA's troubles in sight, IMO.

You can run the E89 Z4 in NASA track events.

My opinion was it was just a cruiser, but I instructed in one at Buttonwillow last year and was pleasantly surprised.

I wonder if you are thinking about my car ? (Black on black 35i, I parked in the pits behind a Prevost bus driving instructor)

BMW CCA (with has practically nothing to do with BMW NA or BMW AG) has had this rule about convertibles since I joined in 1985.

This can be easily remedied if you get the E89 GT3

But in seriousness, there are several other trackday schools. I would prefer driving on the track with different makes and models anyway.

Does this rule apply if the roof is up? Seems like having the roof up would provide some protection in a rollover, but I drive a 4400 lb X3, so what would I know?

The roof is aluminum and weighs only 30 lbs. It provides little protection.

Thanks for the info. Yep, that would offer little protection in a rollover. The Z4 is a remarkable car. I've done a few test drives, but have yet to take the plunge. Someday.

We're members of the PCA (Porsche Club of America) and have been to a couple events. Particularly at the driver education events, there are usually lots of other kinds of cars there (several non-porsches). They do allow convertibles.
