Alpine HID E89 Install DIY Video

I installed these and posted a DIY video specifically for the E89 on You Tube. All the others on there are for different cars. This is my first DIY video so be kind! Hope this helps.

Hey thanks for taking the time put this together! Wish I had this 3 weeks ago . Do you find the inner halo is bluer than the outer one (small halo) ? Since it's one bulb I am guessing it's the halo them selves ? Or is there a trick to it ?

I know what you're seeing, but it's pretty subtle in my car and only if you look close up from the side. Straight on they look the same color, with the inner slightly brighter than the outer. Overall, I'm ecstatic with the results. It look so much better than the yellow OEM angel eyes.

Nice installation video. Your car however does not have a "Power Steering Reservoir" our E89's have electric assist PS. The reservoir you pointed out was for the coolant.

I wish it had. Almost every other BMW has them. But these are nearly identical to OEM in color and brightness.

long term effect

Do u have any long term effect on HID bulbs. Someone afraid that the bulbs are extremely hot and may melt something inside the head light.
Thanks

I had them installed on my M3 by the vendor himself while I was in L.A. and had nothing but problems with them by the time I got back to San Francisco. Sometimes one side is lit and the other is not. Turn off the car and on again and sometimes they are all on and sometimes only one side. Frustrating! They sent me a new ballast and still had same issues. I ended up uninstalling them and sending the whole kit back for a refund. I put LUX back on.

Just finished my installation of regular HID kit.
Here some advise:
1. Normal voltage the feeds the angel eyes H8 is only 3-4V on low beam and 7-8V on DRL mode which is not enough to trigger the relay for HID system
(pls use a multimeter to measure of confirmation)
2. If you want to upgrade from factory Halogen, please buy Alpine kit
3. If you upgrade from any LED angel eyes kit, please follow me

4. By using the capacitors provided by your LED kit (Black tubular pieces in picture) which will increase the voltage up to 12-14V , enough to trigger a 12V relay
5. Follow the above installation video for the rest of installation
6. Use only one side of capacitor for the relay, the other side keep it connected without LED, no error shows

Regular HID kit from ebay $30-40, 12V Bosch relay $3-4, less than 2 hours installation time

So youre saying you used a regular 35w HID kid and used one of the capacitors from the LED bulbs and it works no codes??

Isnt the Alpine HID kit 25w?

Mod on lower grill with LED DRL question?

Hi Z4@Phuket,

Nice mod on the lower grill with the LED DRL. The length of the LED fits great. What brand/make/type of LED DRL are those?

Would like to buy a set for my Z4 as well. Any advice where I can order a pair is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Howie

Digging up an old thread but I was trying to figure out if the HIDs will look too bright for the AEs, as I've heard this as being the #1 complaint. I have an old HID kit that I no longer use and decided to hook it up to see what it looked like. Unfortunately, was unable to get them to work with the lows on.

Jparnes - In the DYI video, you didn't record the post-HID AEs. I'd imagine you are able to have the AE and low beams on at the same time without an issue? While mine are not Alpine, I am using a Relay Harness connected to the battery as well, so I can't imagine mine not working. Yet, when I turn on the low beam, the AEs shuts off. When I turn the lows off, AEs come back on. I could have done the install wrong... Any install tips or are the Alpines just really superior to other brands of HIDs and designed differently?

I wish I could advise you, but I'm not really familiar with how these things work. I got the Alpines because of the brightness, even light distribution and having the AE's stay on with the low beams. Besides the ballast, there is a capacitor in the harness. Maybe that has something to do with the AE's staying on withe the low beams. Do you know what brand you have?

Yes, some complain of the brightness, but I'm OK with it and I don't think I'm blinding anyone at night. I couldn't get a picture of them because they're too bright for the picture, at least at night.

I should point out that I think Alpine is out of business. I blew a bulb and was unable to contact Alex after many attempts. I went ahead and placed an online order anyway and my charge was reversed (he must be an honest guy!). Because the HID kits all have some differences in connectors, getting a bulb from someone else was no possible. I opted to get a new kit that is being shipped as we speak. It was from www.distantextremes.com. Dave there is a very knowledgeable guy and I feel confident with his product. FWIW.

Damned - I need a replacement bulb too.
Jparnes - the URL you indicated is not responding. What did you end up to install to replace the Alpine HID ?
