Early prototypes had cloth top. It can be clearly seen on those two pictures.

I don't think those are really "cloth tops". They are just cloth placed over the metal roof to throw us off. If you look at the new 6 series spy shots it has the same thing, but it probably will be a hard top.

Also look at how ill fitting the cloth is on the first car, it would never fit like that. Either the cloth was placed over the framing of the hardtop or this was just a temp roof.

On first picture you can even see crossbars which holds cloth. But its not important, because it wont be in production. New 6 series will get folding hardtop roof too, while Z2 will have cloth top.

Now we are only a few days before press release, thats important

Not to beat a dead horse, but if you look close here at the 6 series, you can see those same crossbars.

But you are totally right who cares? Maybe they were thinking a cloth top for the new z maybe not. It doesn't matter.
You would probably know more than me anyway; I am going off total speculation here.
You are right, I am really excited about the new car. I can't wait!

Hmm... I had information that press release is in week 45. But looks like they moved press release to next week, because this week (tommorow or in wednesday) they will release financial results for 3rd quarter.

So if they stick to first plan, press release will be at the end of this week. If not, then next week.

I was told the same thing.... also does not help they planned the release on the same day as the US election, going to get zero press.

Lately things are on Fridays; but who knows anymore it changes from day to day.

There is a US press conference next Wed. for the diesel official release so the Z will definitely drop before then.

Cloth top is for the Z2, it will not be a hard top. The Z4 was rumored to be a cloth top but with the demise of Karmann it would have been too costly for BMW to produce two roofs in house and additionally the car is being moved up market to make room for the Z2 (same story as the 3 b/c of the 1).
