Hi Tranquility,

That ticket was from January 2009 in my wife's Lexus, coming back from our cottage.

The following insurance year, I got a nasty surprise when my insurance went from roughly $1,450 to well over $3,000. It remains at that price for 3 years, assuming no further speeding tickets (which I haven't had any to date, including my Z), so sadly, I'm stuck with that price until July 2012!

I had to put the Z in my wife's name as the principal driver in order to avoid paying a huge fee for that car as well.

Learned my lesson.
Dave

HOLY MOLY....no wonder I've been subconsciously afraid to speed here.

Did you try the below link to hopefully get a better rate?

Crikey, if ONLY it were £100 here.....
Dave

EDIT: Sorry, Euros not Sterling
+1

That is why we only speed up when the RCMP is on coffee break

I am so glad I drove obeying the speed limit in your state as well as all the others on my 12,000 KM US road trip well I did follow some of the leaders going a bit more then 65 MPH or 75 MPH I think here and then I was at 90 MPH only for short distances.

Just smiles Dave did you now? thinking about selling your Z4? ~grin~ Keep an eye out for the RCMP you know a lot of people on the 400 and 401 go 130 KM/Hour and then some. Stay in the middle or right lane or the RCMP will single you out again. So be on guard my friend and do enjoy your Z4.

Btw, your rates more than doubled just because you were over by, what, 30/35kph? That's just another sneaky way for ins cos to charge more. That really sucks.

Reminds me of the actual incident I've heard about ....

The Police man to the Seeder "I've been waiting for you all day!"

The Seeder to the Police Officer "I got here as fast as I could Officer!"

after the Officer stopped laughing he gave the Speeder a warning and send him on his way.

We should all be that lucky to get stopped by the same officer

Cheers,

Rolf-Dieter

Tranquility,

Sucks for SURE! Unfortunately, while only 35 some odd km's over the limit, I was the ONLY car coming down the stretch. I can only assume there'd been no one down that stretch for some time (was really early on a Sunday a.m.) so I suppose he just decided to pick me!

When I spotted him, I indeed slowed down, but was too late I'm afraid.

Yes, tried MANY different insurance companies, believe me I called EVERYONE and these guys wound up being the cheapest by roughly $200/year. You're definitely correct in saying that it's just another way to scam more cash from the drivers. While I fully admit to speeding, being the only guy on the road that day, I have to say I was being a pretty safe driver; as I said, my fault for speeding since I'm the one at the wheel, but c'mon.....hardly justifies that sort of rate increase, if any increase at all. I've seen some pretty bonehead moves along the 401, 400 & 416 in my day.

Dave
p.s. Rolf - you live in London Ont somewhere correct? We've got OPP patrolling our 400 series highways. Perhaps the Mounties are more tolerant in your neck of the woods, but not out here. They're worse than the QPP (Québec Provincial Police).

That's why I 'speed' only when in packs, like tuna in schools trying to sneak pass some predator or something (they can only pick off so much lol).

I've been away for a long time but the 1st thing I've notice since coming back is that the quality of drivers really has gone downhill. I've seen many crazy driving bad habits every single day I drive it's not even funny.

That must be every where. Most people are more concerned with talking on the cell, and doing other things than the task of driving safely. Tailgating, left lane campers, varying interstate speeds by 10 mph or more, and changing lanes without looking, are all too common.

In the U.S. the fines are a joke. We just make it a pain by forcing the drivers to take training courses or appear in court or even jailing them.
Yep, depending of the speed and situation, it may cost up to 35% of the year's income (but as the income is private, you may still try to "lie" a bit...).
