I vote for the 911. Love the 335i and the Z4M, but just doesn't have the over all feel of the 911.

Actually, that thought had occurred to me...Need to see it and get a feel for it and see how different it is compared to my Z4M...

Kind of off topic but if you have test driven the Cayman S; how does the Z4 M compare to Cayman S (other than the coupe/roadster major difference)?

I've driven both. The Cayman S handles unlike no other car; it's awesome - even against a modest modded suspension on a bimmer. It's said that the Cayman S handles better than the 911.

I've driven both (911 & Cayman) and the Cayman is definitely memorable. I also drove the 997 Targa 4S and it's quite memorable too - toss up I would say - fun fun fun. I can't exactly remember the 911 S - for some reason - maybe I didn't "drive" it ; so, I'm scheduled to drive an 2009 this week.

I have test driven the z4 m roadster and had an old m3 for a month (one of my friend's). I will test drive an 08 cayman S with turbo wheels soon and I will then try to decide between the z4 m or cayman S. Although price is not a real big issue the 4 years of free service is definitely a plus for a performance vehicle I think (BMW).

The cayman S will blow you away. You may notice some power difference of the z4M, but the feeling of the porsche, the shifting, brakes, clutch is super nice, plus the sound behind the seat of teh flat-6 is nice.

Free maintenance is nice...

The thread is over a year old. Is anyone asking the question?

I've had 3 Porsche's and I am done with them. Not the same car as a Z4 in any respect-not even the Cayman-but the cost to maintain any Porsche correctly needs to be factored in to the equation. Plus, they are a very utilitarian car; if you are considering the Z4, you are obviously looking for something that is a little more luxo than the typical Porsche interior. They ride hard, as well. Styling is no longer a factor, as they have left the iconic look of the "classic" 911 body style.

Save your money. Money was not a factor for me, and I still have chosen a Z.

Funny, I just test drove to 2010 911 yesterday. One was a carerra 4s and the other was just carerra s. The clutch is hard to push down and the steering is heavier. Handling is great, but you got to rev it to real feel the push back to your seat. After driving both extensively, In both aggressive and normal suspension, I still prefer the Z4 or M3. Just my preference. I just wanted to test them to get it out of my system.maybe it takes time to get used to?

I compared both (Cayman S and Boxters S to Z4) before I bought the Z4.

Porsche sticks more to the track, options cost a lot more, cost of ownerships is higher, etc.

I chose the Z4 because I drive it daily and the normal selction gives me little bit more confort during long trips.

All is personal, but Porsche just costs more in general. If you want more extras, you need to have a second wallet.

If you have enough cash, go for the Porsche. A Z435i tuned to 400HP is fair enough too... and more unique then the Porsches you see on every corner.

I'll take my 35i over any 911 or 911 S that is a 2008 or older model, coupe or convertible.

I'll take a 911 S convertible if it is a 2009 or newer, over my 35i.

Under no circumstance would I take a 911 Coupe over my 35i, unless it was a newer 911 Turbo.

+1

This was exactly my thinking when I bought the Z. I want an 09 or above 977T Cab. Once they hit the $95k mark I'm all over that. Other than that car or maybe a regular Turbo you just don't get the balance you can get for the money with a new 3.5i and about $900 in mods for a close to 380hp. The porsche just doesn't get exciting until you get to the Turbo in my opinion. I had a 996 Turbo a few years ago and loved that car. It always put a smile on my face. The Z does the same thing

look at my "Z4 Mods in Progress" post - it gives a lot of details but in short:

1) ESS Stage II tune
2) Stett Performance FMIC
3) Stett Performance Charge Pipe with dual Diverter Valves
4) Eisenmann 2x90mm Race Exhaust

I have never put it on a dyno due to wildly varying results but this is an impressive set up - my wife loves it and the Z is an absolute rocket with this set up.
