Wheels and Tires for my 35is

Hi all,

I hope I put this in the right section but...

I'm considering my first upgrade for the zed as being tires and maybe wheels.
I'm currently rolling with the Star 295 18" wheels and am considering something lighter and larger after reading about the stock wheels.

So heres my options followed by some data.

Option 1: ~$1100
Replace the rubber with PSS. The RFT's make me sad when I drive my PSS equipped 2012 WRX.
I don't really mind the stock wheels but they have some wear on them from the previous owner and are heavier then the TSW's.

Option 2: ~$2700
I would like to buy some 19" TSW Nurbergring wheels and wrap them in PSS rubber.
Expensive but I like the weight savings of ~7lbs a wheel.
Of course I also like the way they would look on my blue zed .

Questions:
So if I do option 2 what TSW wheels do I select to keep the car from rubbing or driving poorly?

Front seems like a no brainer since this can be a direct stock replacement
FRONT: 19x8 225/35-19 OFFSET 35

Rear has me scratching my head though after looking at these places:

(TSW fittings guide) REAR: 19x9.5 255/30-19 OFFSET 41
or this
(Discount tires) REAR: 19x9 255/30-19 OFFSET 20

TSW is half an inch wider then stock and discount tires has a 21mm offset difference.

The primary goal is to get the car glued to the road more without ruining its DD usage.
But I really like the idea of losing ~28lbs of unsprung weight....

Thoughts?

Hey welcome! I am using Dunlop star specs on the OEM 18s with +10 mm wide front and rear. I like it a lot

You should browse the classifieds. I think there is a set of style 326 19s with PSS on sale from a member who is getting rid of their lease

How about 18" size for those aftermarket wheels? Might be even lighter and also cheaper wheels and tires.

Actually I have been considering running the 18's since they are about $40 cheaper per wheel and save another 1lb per wheel.

For the record the 18" config from discount tires:
FRONT: 18x8 225/35-19 OFFSET 35
REAR: 18x9.5 255/30-19 OFFSET 40

So my question is:

Will the 18" or 19" fit without rubbing or handling issues since they don't make these wheels to exact OEM specs and if so do I need spacers?

the rear OEM wheel is 8.5" wide with ET40 offset and the front OEM wheel is 8" wide with ET29 offset.

Our cars have same offset measurements as the E46 (non M). You can get away with a 10 inch rear if you'd like. You can also get away with wider rubber as well.

here is my setup:

Linea Corse LC8181
f: 19x8.5 et 30
r: 19x10 et 37

Tires Continental Extreme Contact DWS
f: 245/ 35/ 19
r: 275/ 30/ 19

Thanks for all the replies!

That offset calculator is quite convenient and has been added to my car toolbox

If I do the full package I'll be running with this configuration then.

FRONT: 19x8 245/35-19 OFFSET 35
REAR: 19x9.5 275/30-19 OFFSET 41

(I like the tire widths JTS)

If no one yells stop I'll probably order them at the end of the month.

Definitely post pics and let us know how the setup works.

Also, for what it is worth, since you are pushing the envelope a bit in terms of tire width, I would recommend double checking on the actual width of the tire you are buying if it is different from what JTS1981 is using. (the 265 wide dunlops I got were more than 10mm wider than the 255 wide stock tires.. could make a difference between rub and no rub for you!)

Wheels/Tires Complete.
Just got them put in this morning before work so I only have one picture to show right now.

Details follow if you care:

I ordered them Wednesday the tires arrived in the afternoon.
The wheels arrived yesterday afternoon. (TSW is local to Cali I guess)

My final decision was to go with 18's because there were too many pros.
Lighter, more comfort and a little cheaper.

Final cost was $2200 out the door.
Tire sizes were 235/40 front and 265/35 rear.

Theory craft says my total weight loss for wheels/tires is 32.38lbs
I weight the wheels but not the tires so 24lbs of that is confirmed.
Assuming Tirerack was right add 8lbs and thats how she goes.

I have 5 miles on it so I can't review much but I'll say that the car feels lighter and MUCH more comfortable when I ran over old time trouble spots.

I'll be back in a week or two to give a better review once I've put down some more miles.

I finally got my new VMR V710 Wheels for the Z.
I went with Hyper Silver.
I stayed with 18" wheels, which I have now, for a number of reasons:
1. As my RFT Bridgestones only had 2200 miles on them (and what the budget allowed) I decided to re-use my tires to ware them out. As well, I was able to reuse my perfect condition TPMS and BMW Center Caps.
2. For comfort levels I wanted to stay with 18's.
3. My next mod will be an H and R spring drop which will lower my NON sport suspension by 1.2 inches in both the F and R.

Wanting to make sure that I had a quality company un-mount and re-mount and balnace the tires/wheels, I asked VMR for a mounting recommendation. They told me to find a company that owns a Hunter Road Force GSP9700 machine. This is a NO Touch the RIM ( lack of a better description) for un- mounting and re-mounting tires on performance (or any) rims.

Lucky for me, there was a local guy who only works on Bimmers, MB , Porsche etc cars that had this machine. I hate to let any one work on the car, BUT was forced to for this. They did a great job BUT as always they did scratch the lug holes on 2 wheels. I already bought the touch up paint. Whatta ya gonna do.

To get the best fit W/O spacers, which I did not want, but wanting to get the wheels to fit as close as possible to being flush to the fender, VMR recommeded the following F and R sizes:
Front
18 x 8.5
35 Offset
5 x120 bolt pattern
72.6 Hub OEM fit

Rear
18 x 9.5
33 Offset
5 x120 bolt pattern
72.6 Hub OEM fit

I love the new look.
Can't wait for the $$ to be saved for my drop.

The Hunter Road Force is the best touch-less machine out there, but, that only ensures no scratches on the lip. Like you mentioned, I've rarely had luck with absolutely no scratches. There is always a ding here or there, most commonly on the lug holes or center bore area. Brought in my new wheels to a Certified BMW Repair Center and guess what? When I got home noticed a nice 3 inch long scratch along the lip. I have just learned to accept things like these.

Please do most pics, though! The V710 are very popular - one of my best friends just got a set for his E92. I'm interested in seeing how the et. 33 looks, as I run 38 in the rear.

You are right, I stand corrected. I confused the Road Force with the other Hunter leverless, touchless tire mounter they usually have right next to the machine.

20% all around- Sides and back.
Illegal in MASS. 35% is the legal tint, but I wanted the limo look.
I just put my top down for the required annual inspection.
That and the front place goes back on with tie wraps and I am fully compliant.

Small update:
80 miles and I have a big of regret. I should've done this sooner.

The good:
After the tires warmed up from about 15 miles of highway driving I refueled and at the next light I mashed the gas expecting some wheel spin in Sports+ with full throttle (no launch or overboost).
The car hooked up with no spin or DSC lights and rocketed me forward.
I was happy.

Hit the regular bumps, dents, dips, and umps.
No feelings of dread or guilt the tires absorbed everything without any drama.
Normal mode (comfort for some of you?) finally feels "Normal" and Sports mode is something I can use all the time without guilt of damaging the suspension.

The car feels "Nimble" possibly due to the rotation mass reduction or maybe its all in my head but I'm really starting to enjoy this car as it feels much less like a tank and more like a roadster.

The bad:
These tires resonate like crazy on the freeway. They HOWL. and I don't care at all because they are that good.


Some Details:
I am running 38psi all around cold.
Wheel bolts are torqued to 90ft/lbs as per the manual.

Your first post says you planned to put PSS on your car - and they howl on the highway? These are some of the quietest tires I've ever owned! Or maybe you changed your mind?

38 psi seems very high. Are you following what is listed on the door jam? Remember those numbers are intended for runflat tires.

I just replaced my stock RFT's with Yokohama Neova 8R's (They are available in the same sizes 225/35/19 and 255/30/19)

My first choice were the PSS from Michelin but unfortunately they aren't available here so I ended of with the Yokohama's...

I've only had them on for two days but wow, what a difference!! The car feels so composed now, no more hopping around, much less cabin noise and fewer rattles inside. I'm currently in Johannesburg so the roads aren't always great but with these tires the car feels completely different.

Very happy indeed!

This will probably be the last update since I've put on about 2,000 miles with the new shoes.

So basically I still love these tires/wheels and would do it again 100%.

The car holds to the ground like glue so no more fun mini burnouts for me without launch control or maybe some power mods.

One thing I want to note is how sloppy the car feels in normal mode (M adaptive suspension). I think this is just a case of when you fix one glaring defect all the old ones now seem louder. Solution? Sports and Sports+ all the time. The car actually feels "right" in those modes (maybe I should do some anti roll bars next?).

To answer some old questions that may still need it:
I finalized on PSS tires that are 10mm wider then stock (no rubbing issues)

I suppose I should reiterate on my Howling tires comment since it only occurs when the road resonates with the rubber (like some bridges) but 99% of the time they run quiet. My WRX is also running PSS tires all around and its about the same noise level or maybe a bit less since they aren't as wide.

The 38psi cold isn't a mistake but I have let some air from the front to 36psi since I feel the car grips a little better. Tire wear appears normal so far and I'm 60% highway.

Last bit. I don't track the zed but I do enjoy pushing it occasionally on trips and my butt says it feels better like this and hes the only one who gives a poop.
