135 to Z4
quick question to all.
Anyone as left their 135 to get a Z4 28 or 35. If so...any regrets. Thinking seriously to make the trade in the next 2 weeks. However....the Z4 is only a 2 seats. Very small trunk space when the top is in. at the end of the day if I don't go with the Z4, my second option will be a 335IS. thanks for your comments and feed-back. hyper1 |

Really depends on how you use the car. The Z4 is clearly a roadster... It is not made to be practical. If you know that from the get go, it is one of the most beautiful cars on the road. If you need 4 seats and a trunk... I obviously voted for the Z4 and then got a second car when I need more space or when I drive during the winter to avoid rock chips and other hazards...

I made the switch from a 135i M sport to a Z4 35i with sport package lat year. Very happy with the switch. Very. The 135i is much more practical but also much less sporty and personally the roadster styling really works for me.
The Z4 is my fun car and so the lack of trunk space is not a big deal for me. It bigger than you think though. And to go from coupe to convertible in 20 seconds is just magic. |

The Z4 35i has the same engine as the 135 (N54). You'll be disappointed with the N20 engine in the 28i.

not really, lightly tunned N20 can hang with N54

I know looks are subjective, but the 1 series looks like a pregnant cat from the side Surely there is no competition!

I own a Z and a 1. I will say this they are both different cars. I will also say this once you drive the Z you wont look back. Overall the handing is better. Response is about the same. The Z is a little heavier i think with the hard top convertible but that is neglible. (dont hold me to that last fact I didnt look and dont remember from when i researched it). You do lose 2 seats but unless you have kids i cant find a practical use for the back seats in the 1 anyway. My wife always complains about the lack of space there but she never complains about the Z even though it has no back seat. Cornering between the two is definately better in the Z. There are curves i can take at much higher speeds in the Z that i simply cannot match in the 1. The Z is fast, I have never put it up against a 1 but i would bet that it would certianly give it a run for its money if not leave it. The DCT function works exactly the same in the Z and I also think it is a bit more tuneable. Stay away from any Z that has the 296 rims. Just do a search and you will understand. If you have any other questions that i did not address please ask. I am on here daily so I will answer if i know the answer. I love my Z and i like my 1 a lot. but there is a distinction between the two

Had thence all
Had 07 335i Coupe but sold and went to the Z4. 3.5 I m-sport manual. Had 135i while I have the Z4, wifes primary car. But drive it a lot. Let the 135i go back after the lease but will buy the Z4. Favorite BMW no regrets. Ok.

If OP's 135 is stock, probably not comfortable chipping the z4 28.. so 28i < 35i
If OP's 135 is not stock, probably will mod his next car.. so again 28i < 35i 28i are great cars and have a lot going for them, the key benefit (IMHO anyway) is cost savings and not performance... EDIT: OP, I was shopping 335is DCT and 135i DCT m sport then I realized the Z4 35 could be bargained down to a very similar price so then the Z4 became very interesting. I think (from my test drives anyway) the performance is pretty much the same across the 35i cars, and it all comes down to how much you want to pay for the body shape. |

Didn't know that the Z4 35i can outperform the 135i...I always thought that our cars are heavier and hence lapped slower and handled not as well. I guess that my assumption is (luckily) wrong? 1M is another story though.

Z4 35i will bolt-on tuned and KW v3 give me smile as much as my 997s with PSS10.
I don't think you will be regret.

Had a manual 135i before 35is. No comparison suprisingly. The 135i is overrated in my opinion. Too much body roll for a start as a proper sports car. Does not feel as stable at high speed. The Z4 35is is miles ahead. Just driving both back to back on a highway will give you the confidence that the Z4 is just a superior machine. It is more planted and feels much more solid to drive even though it is a convertible. Much less body roll too and a nicer weight to the steering.
Z4 DCT 35is is faster than a manual 135i lightly tuned on the same stretch of road in my case. A basic tuned DCT Z4 with suspension + tires is underrated honestly. You will have to spend some major $$$ to get a much better car. I got rid of the 135i after just 1 year or so as I bought into the hype. I still have my Z4 for over twice as long. Z4 is more expensive but its worth it. |

As much smile to be honest.
They give different pleasure. But the Z4 is up there to be honest. I own the Porsche but I don't act like those P car owner think that act like P car is the best in the world. IMO bang for a buck I would get Z4 35i. To own the P is not only the perfomace of it , it's more like to show off as well. I know from the bottom of my heart that Porsche is over price and I keep saying that because I'm being honest. But yes I buy Porsche for the badge , the name , the look , the legendary of it. Z435i with Kw (gotta mention since Kw made so much huge huge different) is one of the best sport car at this moment.

Did your Z4 have the adjustable suspension from the factory? What do you think of just changing the tires and keeping the stock adjustable suspension?

And I had driven one already. The sport suspension factory is good but it's not suit my usage. I go to track twice or more every month and mountain run every week. I don't get use to those flimsy stock feeling in any car for about 4-5 years already. I can not even stand the stock sport suspension on 997. And yes I gave away the comfort and don't really looking to have comfort in my any toys anyway. I would say it depends on your driving style and usage. I have a friend test drove my 997 and got in to pps10 because he like the different but after a while he kinda sick of it since he has porsche just for show and I don't balme him on that everyone has their own purpose. street show wheel I always have either V12 or Pilot Super Sport 2 on my drive around city wheel set. Track I use Nt01 and Hoosier. Never drive aggressive with run flat tire before since I do not trust them.
