New here. new z4 + impressions (kinda long...)
Hey everyone. I just signed up to the forum a month ago but have been lurking around for over a year or so. Most of it spent on the m3 section. Finally switched to the Zed side.
Picked up a space grey z4 35i with DCT earlier this week. It was love at first sight. The styling is just amazing. I was initially looking at getting an e92 m3 to replace my e46 m3 smg. Went in to my local dealership to set up a test drive for the e92 when my SA showed me their new z4 that had just arrived. It had just been taken off the truck and being prepped in the back. Basically saw it and bought it there and then. Didn’t even test drive it but didn’t have to, the styling just won me over. After reading the reviews on here, I knew I had made the right choice! Equipment wise, it has pretty much everything you would want, idrive, ipod, sport seats, M adaptive suspension, PDC, DCT etc. Only things missing are comfort access and electric seats but got a great deal on the car so not too bothered about it…yet. Compared to my e46 m3, the z4’s ride is more comfortable and more relaxing. The e46 m3 was very edgy and in your face so to speak, which was nice when you’re really going for it. But when you wanted to have a relaxing drive home after a long day it becomes quite annoying (read PITA). A better day to day car – ride wise. Handling isn’t too bad either. I expected it to be much worse than the m3 but overall pleased with it. The steering lacks a bit of feel and IMO too light in normal mode so only been driving it in sport/sport + so far. I also have servotronic which I can see the point of having it but its far too electronic if you get what I mean. I like it when its nice and heavy at higher speeds but the way the steering weight changes from light to heavy is not gradual enough. Sometimes I’ll be driving in town when I get caught off guard because the wheel has suddenly become heavier and require more force to turn. BMW needs to fine tune it IMO. I’ll probably get used it to with time. We’ll see. DCT is great. I actually wanted to get back into a 6mt but as I said, the deal I got was great so didn’t really have a choice. So glad it came with DCT. The shifts are very, very smooth, almost too smooth in normal mode. I like to feel the changes like I did with smg in my e46 m3. Putting it in sport/sport + makes the transmission shift faster which gives me more feedback when changing manually. One thing that really annoys me is the electronic handbrake. Technically it’s fine, just that you have to be on the brakes every time you want to engage/disengage it. I always end up getting screamed at by my Zed. I also got a set of 276 in 17s with blizzaks LM-25. At first I really didn’t want to get 17s for this car but the weather has been really crap this winter so I decided to do the smart thing and order a set. 17s are too small for the z4. Looks really bad IMO seems so out of proportion. It’s so depressing looking at the car with 17s on. I can feel its pain. But it will probably save me when it snows and when I go up to the mountains, so I can’t complain too much. I had no idea 276s were available as 17s. I thought they were only available as 19s. Still looks crap because of the size, but they look way better than 292s or 290s. The z4 came standard with 296s for summer. Hopefully it will get warmer soon. This is my first roadster, so obviously it falls short on practicality. Seems very claustrophobic at first coming from a 4 seater but I’m not going to cry over it. Overall, very happy with the new Zed. It’s an awesome car when you take everything into consideration. Still have to sort some things out like the servotronic but once you get used to it, as I’m sure I will, it’s just a great car. Loving it. Now I just need the weather to warm up so I can start modding! Already got a stubby antenna from my local Peugeot dealer thanks to this forum. Much better than OEM. Probably also going to debadge the sdrive nonsense and the z4 at the back. Cleaner look. Terrible blackberry photos below. Left my camera at home in all the excitement. Weather’s been too crap to take decent ones. Thanks for looking. Take care, T |

It looks stunning (although I agree the 17's look a little lost in the arches).
I agree with your comments about the weather, roll on the spring so we can get the tops down and enjoy our cars even more! |
