Exhaust mods = a MUST?? After 2 years with 3D Design exhausts

While most people will agree the stock exhausts are "OK/GOOD" for the 35i/is, I wondered what our opinions are on aftermarket exhausts?

I've had the 3D Design exhausts on my Z for 2 years now and I have to say, it was the best thing that I've done. At a cost of over $7000, it wasn't cheap, but easily worth every cent. (There are heaps of cheaper options out there though, that will do just the same)

The sound it makes is just sensational. Over time, it's developed a really deep growl, and lately, it started making this bad-ass gurgle that scares the passengers/passerby's/me.

Also the Z being twin turbo, the opened up airflow greatly improves the performance. Take a look at the ridiculous narrowing in the stock exhaust pipes in the attached pic (left), c.f. the 3D Design (right)! The dealership often asks me if my Z is 'chipped' as it drives very differently. I put it down to the exhausts..

I hope this post doesn't get perceived as a 'self pat on the back', but rather an encouragement for more Z4 owners to seriously consider exhaust mods as a very effective and substantially gratifying mod, that won't hurt warranties or reliability issues, all the while significantly boosting the performance and driveability of the car.

It looks awesome and I agree - I have had Eisenmann Race on my wife's car since the first 2k miles.

Looks nice, but I love the 35is exhaust note and wouldn't consider changing it for anything, much less $7k. I dropped $1,800 into an AE exhaust for the 335 and wish I bought an "is" exhaust instead.

looks nice! what kind of wheels is that?
I was just looking at exhaust last night and there are some variety of options and prices range from $900 for a Remus to $2000 eisenmann, 3D etc.

Can you post a video or sound clip?

7000 $???

No thanks.... At least for a turbo car...

Really happy with the great performance and sound of my custom made 3" DPs and 3" MPs straight up to the stock mufflers.

Stainless steel. 350 euro installed. A perfect marriage with JB4 Map 2 and BMS Intake .

your mods sound much more financially sound than mine. and probably more effective. ;-)

do you think the intakes make a noticeable difference in pulling power?

Also I just remembered (not that it justifies the stupid high price) $7k was for both the exhaust + diffuser from 3D

From the dyno charts of BMS it should give around 10-15 whp mainly after 6000 RPM, avoiding the power drop @ high rev, typical of the N54 (and many other turbo engines). In practice i could barely notice that and still prefer to upshift around 6000. On the other side, the sound improved.

NOTE: i installed the DPs, the MPs, the dual intake and switched from JB4 map 1 to map 2 the same day, following the instructions of BMS suggesting to not use the map 2 without intake and DPs.

Honestly i can not separate the different contribution of each one of these components but, theoretically, the DPs and the + 2psi of map 2 (with respect to map 1) should be the most effective mods.

What i know - for sure - is that the car now is really fast, faster than my old 2010 M3 E92.
Obviously til the first corner comes.... at the track, the M3 E92 is way better than the zed.

Damn wish I had 7000 to blow on an exhaust. If it satisfies you that's all that matters

Looks good, sound decent but $7k for pipes and fibreglass wool is bit too much, isn't turbo/supercharger kit cost $7k?

However I am glad that you are happy with it's value, at the end personal satisfaction is way more important then someone's opinion

I've had Eisenmann for more than 2 years and I agree the sound and performance with OP.
But, I don't understand 3D design being more than 2X expensive.
Bought mine under 3k for new one.

I definitely agree on the point of the exhaust mod being a must. The stock exhaust definitely doesn't match the exterior of the car. It seems like a lot of posters here find the 3D exhaust's price not justifiable but just like any of their products I'm sure it's top-tier quality. The exhaust is made by a highly reputable exhaust company, 3D most likely just gave specs to their liking. It's also a valvetronic exhaust I believe. If this sounds like any of the exhausts that comes from the same company, these things sound amazing! I would love to hear this with a AR Catless...

What are the specs on your wheels (width, offset etc) and what size tires are those?

I really like how that looks!

jannisa>> that vid is in my favorites too.

I see a lot of 35i response here but sound of the IS is different already. Any 35is owners with videomaterial on custom exhausts?

Great but not the price i was looking for my 35is. I am considering changing to Eisenmann Sport as race is illegal here. Though everyone has priorities id just prefer less intrusive model and get the Sport exhaust from Eisenmann for 1720Euro shipped.
