Dynamic Driving Control mode resets on start?

Hi folks. Just traded in my E92 for a E89 and I have a question (I did a search but didn't find anything). I find that when I set the DDC mode to "Sport", it will reset back to "Normal" the next time I start the car. Is there a way to make the mode selection stick, or do I need to select "Sport" every time I start the car?

Every time you start the car. Sucks.

Does your car actually say "normal" ? Mine says comfort, sport and sport+dsc off"

Wonder if there is a calibration difference between "normal" and "comfort"

It doesn't say anything when it's on "Normal". Only says something if it's "Sport" or "Sport+".

I think they just changed the name at some point and that "Normal" and "Comfort" are the same. But don't quote me on it.

Why would that affect fuel efficiency?

comfort and sport the engine run the same for me. the suspension is stiffen up. sport+ the throttle is more sensitive and traction control is off. for some odd reason, its not 100%. when my tail hang wide, it kick in correct itself

mpg, its the same if you drive normal. i only drive in sport+ and i have a heavy foot so i get about 18MPG mixed fuel economy

I am not sure if the sport button in the Z4 does the same as in the 1-series M coupe. If it does it would let the turbos run at higher "idle" speed and thereby reduce turbo lag. This creates more loss and worse mpg in some conditions.

And when you spin the wheels in sport+ you also get worse mpg. This would not happen in sport mode.

In DCT cars the gear shifting points and clutch speeds are also different in different modes. Due to the imperfectness of our gasoline engines, we get better mpg by selecting the highest gear possible at any given cruising speed.

Interesting, thanks for the info!

Also, not related to the thread topic but I'm just curious. How much does it cost to get a Z4 in China? I heard the tariff is murder there.

I think China is 100% tax so its double the cost of the US price. Its not as bad as in Vietnam. Import tax is 200% so it ended up triple the price.

I think it depends whether the cars are imported or produced inside mainland China. The sedan four and six-cylinder 3 and 5-series are all produced locally. They are less expensive than the Z4s which are imported with most options pre-selected by BMW. Here are the list prices.

100 RMB = 16.0398 US dollars

sDrive20i RMB 578,000
sDrive28i RMB 669,000
sDrive35i RMB 788,000
sDrive35is RMB 906,000

I once did a comparison of BMW list prices with the 1-series M coupe across different countries of interest to me. I think they are 2011 prices:

Singapore: 1.494.000 RMB
Denmark: 1.155.000 RMB
China: 598.000 RMB
Germany: 450.000 RMB
USA: 297.000 RMB

So that is life. A used 09 Z4 is worth the same here in China as a new 13 Z4 + the airplane ticket, some gas and mods in the US...

Yes, I meant import taxes. My friend moved to China for work and he was fortunate to bring his 370Z over without any import taxes. He ended up selling it for 75K.

I find it strange that it's cheaper to buy a German car in the US than it is in Germany.

And I find it strange that the shipping (aka destination and handling) charge on a car that comes from Germany is the same as for a car that comes from a factory in the US ...
