Need Opinion On Replacing Tire 1 or 2

Hi,

So I rolled over a nail on my rear wheel side wall and the tire shop said it can't be repair and need new ones, understand.

I'm debating whether I should replace one or both rear.

Now I know it is generally recommended that I replace at the very least, 2 at a time. But I think this refers to a completely new tire vs old one.

However, I still have a decent amount of tread left on my MPSS. It's measuring 7/32. I found a used one that is around 7-8/32.

2 new MPSS shipped is around 550.00.
The used tire is 150 free shipping.

I save around 400.00 going this route. What do you guys thing?

If you have assurance the used tire is undamaged with even tread wear, I'd go that route.

I like the idea of a used one that matches that close in size.

However,
I would be very wary though of getting one that has a bubble on the side wall.

Just be prepared for the case the used tire is actually no good.

Just get 1 new one. New is 10/32"
I rather have comfort of a new tire with road hazard warranty than getting used one.

who knows if the other tire will catch a nail in the future.

Yeah, thats a risk when buying used, worst case scenario, I'm down 150.00, best case scenario, I save myself 400.00. I'll have to think about it.

We'll I'm worry the tread depth varies too much on brand new tires.
I think if the difference is too large, it prematurely wears out the CV joints.

Another option for that is the new tire can be shaved to match the diameter of the existing tires.

Doesn't seem so great an idea to shave down a perfectly new tire but if you have all wheel drive then it makes better sense to buy one new one and shave it down to match the other three.

Well, i hate to be the one who says this but, the last time i replaced tires i was going to only replace the two rear tires. I did that. Same tire, so i thought. When i got the vehicle back and drove it home the car had a severe under-steer. I made an appointment and took it back as soon as i could. I had those two tires replaced again and drove it home. Nope that didn't do it either. Still under-steering. I took it back again and this time opted to have all four replaced and that fixed the issue. These cars are very sensitive to tires. I'm not sure if it was tire compound or tire wear that was the issue but it literally felt dangerous.

My wife wouldn't even drive the thing. So if you have had them on the vehicle for any period of time I would recommend replacing all four. Again sorry to bring this up to you. I think i posted an article about it when it happened as well so check it out.

This is not good news! After learning that the E89 goes through rear tires twice as fast as front, I replaced all four with Bridgestone Potenza S-04 Pole Positions from Costco, thinking that it would be relatively easy, cheap and convenient to replace the rears only when they wore out. I wonder if others here have had the same experience as you. I'm getting fairly close to needing new rears.

I hit a pretty bad pothole and blew both passenger side tires. I've replaced just that side and ride fine actually. I'm always in sport+ mode and don't feel too much of a difference. I've driven them pretty hard so I guess the new ones are "seated".

If you are not staggered then you can swap front to back. If you are staggered then yeah you can take your chances i suppose. I hope that everyone isnt like me. Coming from racing cars i really feel the difference between two and four tires. All i can say is give it a try but make sure you have $ in the bank for the extra two tires just in case.

What did you replace them with? I think that tire compound has something to do with it. the Bridgestones that come with the car are pretty hard tires so i suspect they would not grumble as much as a softer tire.
