Two Questions on RFT
let's make it 3 Questions ....
Hi Fellows, It seams the 296 wheel cracking dilemma continues. I hope it gets resolved soon. I have three (3) questions regarding Run-Flat Tires on your cars, it has now been more then two (2) years that the e89 was introduced to the market. Question 1, How many of you have switched to Performance Tires? Question 2, What generation of RFT are you running (I understand Bridgestone now has Generation III out)? Question 3, Have any of you had the negative 2.5 degree camber reduced to negative 1.5 or 1 degree to reduce inside tire wear? I don't think a poll would do the three (3) question justice. I think a copy and paste then adding to it would work better. It would be nice to share your experiences. My interest here is since I do plan to eventually (once I find a good deal) to add a Z4 to my toy collection for short weekend trips to the lake cabin Thanks all, Rolf

I switched to regular tires with my first Z4 and am switching again to Pilot Super Sports upon delivery of my new Z4.
Gen 3 RFT's (Bridgestone S001) for now only come in 20" size (according to Tire Rack) so not too many Z owners are going to have that. I wouldn't change the camber. I would rather maintain the handling characteristics that the car is designed for and deal with tire wear. Decreasing the camber (making the wheel more vertical) will decrease cornering ability. I mean look, it's a roadster...what'd you expect? Drive it like it's supposed to be driven and pony up for new tires. My 2 cents...

2 - Generation 1 3 - Did change 1.5 when the 313's went on, so far very even tire wear Here in Europe the E89 is in its 4th year. |

Thanks for your input, much appreciated. Interesting about the negative camber reduction. I would do the same if I don't intend to use the car on the track
I was in München at Die Welt on May 9th 2009 (just over 2 years ago) That day was what I was told the official showing and introduction of the e89. Was I given wrong information? I know the e85 with the soft top was out before that, I had one for a short while once I returned to Canada ... Rolf

1 - switched to Michelin Pilot Super Sport non-runflats on 18" for my summer wheels.
2 - running runflat Blizzak LM-25 on 17" in winter. No sure on generation. 3 - camber is stock

Rolf, bad math on my part, should written 3 years. My 30i was built in May 2009 and delivered to the dealer in Hockenheim the same month so it is 3 months short of 3 years old. |

Right you are ... next time I'll post before the second glass of red let's call it even since we are 2 years and 9 months (almost 10) past the May 2009 date ....

Technically, the E89 is in its 4th year ('9, '10, '11, and now '12) but its not quite 3 full years old..

Here is my experience:
I had my selling dealer remove the BS Potenza RE050 RFTs at my redelivery in the US. They had 3.2 miles on them as I did not drive the car in Europe due to bad weather at pickup in Jan 2010 (snow and subfreezing temps). I sold the RFTs for $900 to a guy with a 335icoupe who needed tires for a lease return. The dealer installed a set of Yokohama ENVigor tires in the staggered 18" OEM sizes on my stock 18" wheels. I had on 07 and 09 335i vert that I basically did the same thing. Removed RFTs at delivery and installed non-RFTs on both cars. Carry a slime kit in the trunk, knock on wood, have never needed it. I am running the OEM Continental RFTs on my 335d but they are 17" so the ride is better than with 18" tires. Not sure what I will do if and when they need to be replaced. I have almost 20K miles on them and they are not showing much wear at all. May well be able to keep them until I trade the car in a couple of years.

Yipee I will probably be going for a set of these so I can keep my 296's. Which still have no cracks at 16K miles and I think are one of the best looking wheels BMW ever made. The S001 will have the BMW star of approval so should not void any tire or wheel insurance. I suspect BS/BMW will push this tire out across the BMW lineup in short order as production capacity comes up to speed. 1. Stock Max Summer Performance Potenza RE050A RFT 2. Stock as above, I believe these are Gen II. 3. Stock Camber - no inside wear problems @ 10K on Rears. They were replaced due to nails in originals @ 4 & 6K
