OEM Run Flats in the Wet

Anyone else think that the OEM Bridgestone RF's are rubbish in the wet or is it just me?

If the temps are below about 40 degrees the grip of the OEM runflats begins to decline precipitously, below 20 they are rock hard. This is why I removed them at delivery and put on a set of high quality all season tires.

They were fine for me when I did a track day at Laguna. The day was a mix of conditions but the third session was raining and the car had decent traction, the only time the back end stepped out was when I gave it a little too much throttle coming out of the Corkscrew.

if it gets cold you have to change them to winter tires whose compound is more suited for the wet cold weather.

Does Bridgestone publish any data to suggest that the tires should not be used below a certain outside temperature? I do know from personal experience that adhesion does begin to suffer when the temps go below about 35 degrees F. After driving for some time the tires heat up and the traction does get a bit better.

I used mine last December when it was around -5 degrees C and I was sliding round everywhere. There was three inches of snow though......

Sliding sideways at 2 mph isn't actually that much fun.

Mine has been shite in the snow we've had....possibly the worst car i have driven in snow!! But it isn't worth all the hassle and expence of buying and swapping over to winter wheels/tyres for a few weeks in January.
Roll on the summer!!

Put on a set of high performance all season tires and you can drive all year long in safety with a good ride and little if any sacrifice in handling.

As long as the temp is OK, I've found the Z4 RFT traction OK in the wet. I even did the Tail of the Dragon (318 curves) in the rain with no issues. It's much better than a 2006 650i was with that gen of Bridgestone RFTs.

I have the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus on my 550i. There is only a slight loss of dry weather traction but a big gain in wet or cold traction. They are a bit more noisey than PS2s or F1 Asymmetrics but are probably no worse than RFTs.

The one downside is the lack of a spare. If you get a BMW mobility kit (pump + goo), you are nearly equal to RFTs in getting home after a flat but with more effort.
