DIY for Headunit removal?

my googlefu is severely lacking... I can't seem to find any...

I've been able to get the head unit loose, but can't seem to get it clear of my DCT shifter... do I need to remove the shifter? If so how do I do that?

I'm going to install the Blaupunkt plug and play amp w/harness that others have mentioned in a couple of threads here. Got the 475 from crutchfield for $125 however the harness was actually more expensive than the amp since I could only buy it from Bluespot in the UK.

If I can figure that out, I'll see if I can put a DIY together for this when all is said and done.

Here you go:

After you remove the two screws holding the head unit in, pull out and up to clear the shifter.

Yep tried that... There are actually four screws holding the assembly in place.... I have been able to get the top half past the shifter by pulling the shifter back... But the lower half of the radio doesn't clear the shifter... Going to try again this afternoon. I had hoped that after clearing the top half I could twist it up or to the side to clear the shifter.... But no luck so far.

Maybe the 2013s are different. Mine only had 2 screws. Do you have iDrive?

yep iDrive... the top half is the DVD player, but there's a bottom half silver box as shown in this posting:

Oh ok, I don't have iDrive. I have no experience taking apart iDrive components, sorry

Pretty simple...
Pull up the DCT shifter, gently though so not to break the cable connector.
Once up, there is 4 clips 2 front and 2 rear for the shifter trim+leather. Take these out and you will see the shifter connector. Try not to unplug it, cause it will register an error in the ECU and the dealer would know, unless you delete the error later on using an ICOM or any other coding method/cables...

Good luck!

so the shift knob itself is not bolted in place? The shifter trim pops out really easily, I just assumed the knob was one entire assembly bolted down to the center console

No, it is not bolted. It should slide up easily, with little force...

thanks I'll give it a try, my MX5 had a threaded shift knob - so wasn't sure.
