I had intermittent luck getting that to work. I finally decided it was a neat trick to do, but I worried about the toll on my battery with repeated use.

Just when I'm not standing close enough, and I mean right near the door

It says in the manual not to do this because of strain on the mechanisms motors when the engine is off. Why they created a way to do this anyway is beyond me.

As others have said, other than for showing off the roof mechanism while chatting with a friend or family member, this feature is pretty useless 'as is'. If one could initiate the top operation from several 100 feet away while walking towards the car, or if one could initiate the close and walk away while it is closing, that would be useful.

If you don't stand in the right spot, point remote in right direction and/or don't press and hold the buttons in the right sequence, it doesn't work.

mine used to work fine as long as I was in close distance to the door. Now even next to door and very close, it doesn't work. I also got a notice that my battery is low when i came back from a 7 day vacation. I wonder if it has to do with low battery in the car?

I did tried to use the second set of key, and it did open the hardtop, but then after I used the key that didn't work, then I used the second set of key again, and that stopped working also. Now both sets of keys don't work. haha

I will tried to run the car through highway longer and recharge the battery and see what happen. Maybe the car needs the battery to be over 80% charge or something.

If that doesn't, I will charge the remote key battery and see if that's also the problem which I doubt.

There's a battery. Just pull out the valet key and pop open the lid that covers the battery. Unlike the key for my 2006 525 where you can't replace the battery. It's the iPhone of car keys. $250 to replace.

Mine works OK but as stated above, at close range.
I was in instructed to stand by the Drivers side REAR quater panel, as this is closest to where the transmitter sends/received the signal.
Long distance operation does not work.

I wanted to update that the reason of the key remote not being about to open the top was because my car battery was low in charge. i was on a trip for 7 days and because drive it twice a week. I drove the car for 25 mins on hwy and the remote opened the top with no problem

Yeah, as people pointed out, these convertible mechanisms really like top of the line electrical power supply. Bad things happen when they get interrupted or lose partial power while opening. It was always a good idea to start the engine before operating the roof so that there is double power supply.

I can easily see that BMW put in at least the current battery charge as a safeguard.
