I also like this. But I wonder why both the SLK and the boxter (and even the cayman), out-sells the Z4.

Imagine you were BMW, and trying to make a profit. What would you have done differently? You make the best looking roadster, put the most award-winning engine inside. You tune it for that everyday sports-oriented driving BMW is know for, and then the world's leading car show (top gear) comes out with a stellar review and firm recommendation. Even Jeremy Clarkson says he certainly perfers it over the SLK and the Boxter. Yet you keep your feet on the ground, and do not price it any higher than those alternatives.

If I was employed by the marketing department responsible for the Z4, and I hadn't already been transferred to the new M(arketing)-division, I would be thinking very seriously about whether trying to sell cars, that are truly sensational, is really worth it anymore.
Also I would be beating myself pretty badly for betting on Pitbull & Marc Anthony while letting the SLK in on PSY and gangnam-style.

Very good points. I also don't understand why the Z4 is not selling as well as the SLK or the Boxter.

Just went and watched the Pitbull video. The Z4 got a lot more screen time in there than the SLK in Gangnm Style

I think the 28i Z4 is singled out here ... One would expect that it is not one of the favorite cars on the shopping list of a sport minded North American ... Who would like to step into a 4 Cylinder even with twin turbos ... When the 6 Cylinder 30i, 35i and 35is Z4's are there for the taking ... Just saying ... I don't see those fine cars on the list ... So all is well ... Yes

If and when I sell my M3 ... It will not be a new Porsche or SLK it will be a Z4 35i or 35is ... There is nothing like it ... Only I shall make sure I don't get the 296 wheels and yes the wheel tire warranty/insurance will be part of the purchase price.

I see that as a terrible statistic. First of all, BMW is not marketing the Z4's or the M series cars for that matter to be their "Best Sellers." That's what the 3 series is for. I think BMW would sell a lot more Z4s if they wanted to market them as a European Miata. However, I for one, appreciate a bit of exclusivity. To me, it's like saying that Lambos and Bentley's are terrible selling cars. A Z doesn't cost nearly as much, but that's what I think of when someone tries to say that Zs don't sell well. Like are they supposed to be mass marketed like McDonald's? Over 50 billion Z4s sold?

the only concern i would have is that if sales get too bad they will cxl the line. it isnt the first time it has happened. However, i do think there are two things that are a factor here.

1. the price point is a little high to warrant the number of sales i think.
2. they are getting a little far away from the roots of the vehicle. While it is still a roadster/coupe it is losing the lines of the old Z3/Z4.

I had an E85 before my E89 and there are somethings they did right i think. like they made the vehicle look wider by the design. If only it has some nice hips and larger rear wheels like the older Z3/Z4 series.

Oh yeah and come out with a true ///M. The M badge is cool and all but placing an M badge on a car doesnt make it an M. There is a performance difference to be had.

Just saying... any thoughts?

Good point. If this stat is indeed just for the 28i then that changes everything. I too though don't mind having our cars on the rare list - as opposed to worst selling.

I think that's for all Z4 models. I remember seeing stats for previous years where it was just over 3k sold per year. Anyways, I think the new engine is quite good personally.

I too share rking's concern that BMW will just chop the line if the sales drop too low.

Kind of like the Z8, I like being exclusive and rare. Chop away, BMW!

What's interesting is that the more mainstream, less expensive Audi TT sold even less!

It depends how the Z4 is selling wordlwide. The US isn't the only market.

That explains why there are such great lease deals available for the E89

I don't have time to look for data for the competitive set but YoY and absolute units performance isn't great for the Z4. Check out page 32 for H1 2012 results and page 34 for FY 2011 results.

My speculation is that the X series of trucks is profitable enough to keep a low volume car like the Z around to pander to the few fans who want it.

When I was cross-shopping, the TTS was only a few thousand less expensive, so there's definitely less value in getting that Audi, since it's only 4 cyls and has less pwr. Also, one had to order them as they weren't in stock (3 mth wait?!) and the financing terms were awful. All these factors probably contributed to low sales. Still, yes, a bit surprised we 'outsold' the TT line.

If I may - my 2 cents:

1. BMW's mainstream, best selling line is the 3 series. A practical, 2 or 4 door coupe or convertable, with great sporty appeal that typically sells strongly from around $45k - $55 fully loaded in the US. For conversation's sake, let's say its white collar America's meat and potatoes sporty sedan. SUV lovers and well heeled Americans have other BMW's to choose from, but those don't sell in "massive" numbers either.

2. All BMW vehicles have at least 4 seats except one - the Z4.

If you will, I believe for some reason BMW intentionally prices the Z4 out of the mainstream market where it could compete and sell in larger numbers. But, the 2 seater's pricing structure creates exclusivity and maybe that's BMW's long term marketing direction?

Another factor is previously auto plants were dedicated to a specific model and if it didn't sell you had to retool or shut down the plant. Now in the last decade or so, auto plants can build several models on the same line.

If an up-market trend is BMW's long term goal, then management can tolerate the Z's low sales number while still accomplishing their long term marketing objectives.

FWIW

Cheers
