BOTH front adapative struts leaking

Greetings all,

Like many of you, I subscribe to this forum for technical reliability trends to see how the Z4 performs as they age. I have not seen much on this specific issue so I will get right to the point. Any ideas would be greatly helpful. My car is a late year model 2009 30i. I do have the M sport adaptive suspension.

I noticed the car bouncing excessively from the front end really over the last month or so. I suspected it was the shocks so I took it in to my BMW specialist and much to his and my surprise both front struts are leaking, and one profusely. He and I believe its a pretty rare occurrence, because struts in general last a fairly long time. Long story short, the struts are $800 each plus $550 labor. About $2400 in total for this job. I am considering taking it up with BMW customer relations due to this being a safety issue now.

Anyone else experienced this??? Any help or ideas is greatlz appreciated.

While I feel for you, it seems to me that expecting BMW (or any manufacturer) to warranty suspension wear parts on a 7 year old vehicle is a bit of a stretch!

Shocks and struts are generally accepted to be a maintenance item so unfortunately I think paris1 is right. For $2400 dollars I think I'd probably get aftermarket springs, shocks, and struts and the kit that cancels the warning due to the adaptive shocks no longer being there. It's nice for the ride to be adjustable but I'm not sure it's that nice...

Mine have failed at just 35k miles (2009 car and adaptive struts)...

Been looking online for the aftermarket springs, shocks and struts with the kit that cancels the warning. If you could point me in the right direction, I wouild appreciate it.

Were they covered under warranty? Or did you pay to have them replaced? If so, how much and did you use OEM or aftermarket solution.

Haven't done much research since I hopefully won't be replacing mine all that soon, but I did fine this kit at Turner Motorsport. From looking up the KW part number (10220087) it looks like their price is right in line with everyone else's

KW coil over kit with EDC cancellation.

You could also look at any other manufacturer springs and shocks/struts and just use their cancellation kit which is $399. KW's part number for that is 68510145.

I've done nothing yet, they're not totally shot, just leaking so time to decide...

my 2011 35is driver side struct failed at 45000km, also had oil leak problem. But fortunately covered by the warranty.

Mine 2010 35is has the same problem after 108000 km / 67000 miles but only in right side.

Same with mine. Front right shock leaking.

BMW insured warranty said they would cover it when I called them up. Will push it with the dealer at the next vehicle service.
