Have you guys seen the new turbo 4-cyl? It will only occupy the space from the firewall to the front wheel struts. There will be enough space for a jacuzzi in the engine compartment.

ROFLOL

The was an earlier link about this subject on the German language Z4 site, and I think one of the guys on the site mentioned something like that too!

I've heard from a source at BMW that the plan is to stow the roof under the bonnet on the 4 cyl versions so as to free up trunk space.

We all laugh, but that will presumably improve weight distribution.

And lets not start with the mooted 60kg saving!

This thing might handle better than all the other models, and feel more "chuckable", so let's not write it off just yet.

Also, its worth remembering there will be a few 4T owners on here in the not-too-distant future so play nice!

The reality is with petrol prices rocketing up, and belts tightening significantly, this WILL be an attractive model.

Looks interesting - have to wait 'till the 1st for the first installment.

I like that old scifi movie clip of the jet pack - looks like it would have burned his ass off in a big hurry. In those days people didn't notice details like that.

2011 Z4 sDrive 3.0i  [8.33]
2010 135i  [9.00]
I have a 2011 Z4 3.0 on order for over a month now. They still havent sent my dealer a production number. My dealeer thinks I may get a 2012 model. If its a 4 cyl I'll have to re order a 3.5. This car costs too much money to have only a 4 cyl. Maybe I'll be lucky and get one of the last 3.0's

At the moment I won't buy a 30i because the new 28i model, the depreciation of a 30i will be higher the first couple of years . The 28i could be cheaper, weighs less and will be faster. At least this is the case for the X1 model (2000 euro cheaper, 0-62 0,5 second faster) and could also be true for the Z4.

Some German reviews of the new 4 cylinder N20B20 X1 28i do praise this engine. In these reviews some comparisons are made with the N52B30 (30i engine). The X1 with the N20B20 feels more power full.

I'd say that's a debateable point. If the new model were to be called "32i" or something I'd say it would be more likely to effect the value of 30i directly. But with the 28i namplate (assuming that's indeed what it will be called, which sounds likely at this point) the new model could just as easily be perceived as a step down from the prior years. Also, while some people will welcome the turbo I4, there will still be a contingent willing to settle only for the older naturally aspirated I6.

I'm not sure I would worry about that -- most will perceive the 28i to be a step down from the 30i, whether it's because of the number of cylinders or just a naive numerical thing (ie, that's two less "i", must be worse). But if you're really worried about depreciation on this fine of a scale, you'd be better off not buying any car! There's a bigger issue, where it depreciates the minute you drive off the lot, and that factor doesn't really care about the model so much.

Sorry, with all due respect but I don't buy it. I'm afraid BMW is emasculating the Z4, a sport car, and attempting to make it into a Smart Car or a Fiat 500. It's amazing that any I6's remain in BMWs stable and likely won't be for long. In a world gone crazy over the v6, the BMW I6 was a traditionalist's holdout and homage to days gone by, but based on sound engineering principles. Point of fact: the I6 design is one of the most perfectly balanced engines. Alternatively, you won't see any of the supercar marques such as Ferrari pulling this stunt - imagine a Ferrari, Lambo or Bugatti with a V6 or I4 - it's not going to happen!

IMO, Europe is going ga-ga over any perceived "Save the earth" perk. What's with burning or publicly destroying SUVs?!

Isn't the one on the right the 2014 Z4 35is outfitted in Black Sapphire Metallic with Coral Red Extended Leather? Evo's Chris Harris says its 2.0L 2 cylinder drives like La Bomba!

It's all about European regulations, car makers are forced to follow the rules. As long the performance doesn't suffer of new downsized BMW models, I can live with it.

Some regulation effect, take for instance this Aston Martin model. They are forced by regulations to sell this car:

Out of curiosity - What exactly are those EU rules your refering to? Fleet fuel economy standards, size, weight, price? In the US the gov has imposed fleet wide avg fuel economy stds, Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) that pushes the mfg's to produce small cars with better gas milage to balance out the production of larger less efficient full size pick em up trucks, full size luxury cars, etc.

For me the biggest question here is how will this 4 cyl Z4 be distinguished from the 4 cyl Z2 we are expecting?? I might prefer the smaller, lighter Z2 as a better match for the engine ...
