Mr Tonka - the last time I played VB for $$ was at Siesta Key. I went to hit a deep roll shot and my arm dislocated as soon as my hand hit the ball.

I grabbed my arm at the wrist, put my knee in the crock of the arm, twisted and pulled....Shoulder snapped back into place.

One of the guys on the other side of the net threw-up right there on the court

I have another (different) detached ligament in the same shoulder that is causing issues now. It will also require surgery to re-attach, but will only be scope this round.
Tommy John Surgery (TJS)*?

I went to first consultation at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic who invented Tommy Johns on 4/29/1992 on the day of LA riot. Initial consultation.

This is just the start......... (SOB Story about to begin.... )

disclaimer: Yes Orthopedic dudes here... I know TJS is for elbow. I don't know what it is called for shoulder.

Not TJS - purely Rotator Cuff related....funny you bring up a baseball related injury though.

At the end of a full day of VB (pool play, playoffs and finals) - I would have swung my arm 200 times. Serving and hitting, as well as about 300-400 jumps at full extension...A major league pitcher throws 100-125 pitches every 4-5 days.

I had a crush on a volleyball and track girls during my high school. I like those types of girls, but they were not into me. Softball girls , I had better luck with.

I thought it was shoulder ligament, and could not find a term.

100-125 pitch per game is a lot at HS to MLB. I wasn't a pitcher, but if I was in Highschooll, I think I can do about 35?

Wow, never thought of that. That is a lot of wear and tear.

I'm not too familiar with vball technique, but baseball has such intense external rotation it's hardest on your arm in the most vulnerable position. Most I ever threw was 146 pitches in college, end of the season playoffs so recovery didn't matter.

Yea - torque to the shoulder at full extension is not optimal. I'd say I played VB 4-5 times a week (practice, leagues, and tourneys) over 15 years straight (except the year I missed for the 1st surgery).

unlike a pitcher who throws in a linear motion to a stationary target - a VB hitter is constantly looking to hit around a blocker, causing even further stress and rotational torque on the joint...

The guy who painted my motorcycle has his 24-hour belt (finished the 100-mile race in under 24 hours), and wears it quite proudly. Does that count for me?

OK, how about I played 6 on 6 soccer, on a full field Sunday? Blood sugar was 41 at the end of the game.

Awesome! Any time you can make your opponent puke, you've won in at least one aspect.

I've been lucky. That or i've got platinum filled bones. Maybe thats why i weigh so much? At 5'11" i was sitting at 238 a few months ago. But most people would guess that i was maybe 10 pounds overweight. If they aren't platinum filled, they're pretty darn dense. Plenty of ankle and knee sprains from having wheels under my feet for so many years but that's about it.

Here is one of an emergent appendectomy i had while on vacation in Upper Michigan. Didn't even get a lake view room.

A few years ago, the wife had just come out of her IM bubble after the race and decided to go crazy at the Mtn bike trails. Front wheel caught a large tree root on a steep decline and she went over the bars. Hospital took X-rays and told her to keep it in a sling for a week or two and then see an ortho for a consultation. After about 4 days she made the appointment and the ortho looked at her X-ray and said so, are you free for surgery tomorrow morning. Fracking hospital.... It was pretty bad i guess, her left when measured from her spine, her left shoulder was 1.5" narrower than her right. So that would have made a swim stroke pretty much impossible without surgery. She's still got a titanium plate and 7 screws in there.

She's super stuborned. She wouldn't take any pain meds during this whole thing. Only ibuprofen. I was ready to grind up some narcs in her food. The best was when her nerve block wore off after surgery. haha thought she was gonna hurl for sure. I'm like want a pain pill? It'll make everything better... she tole me i was "number one" in her own special way. lol

Nice!!!!

I've also had 2 back surgeries....and once had my left ankle dislocate to the point the bottom of my foot was facing up

I'll say, rotator cuff is possible one of the most painful surgery's you can have.

Tell her props for no pain meds...that's how us distance peeps roll!!

I told him to wash his hair, the shower went on, and i assumed he went in. Little did I remember I left my hair cutting scissors to the bathroom counter after I took a few inches off my own mop.

I felt like the best parent in the world! I actually considered letting him be like that for a few weeks so I could get hair extensions on him somehow. The kid is missing an ear so I though school would be easier for him if he had a bit longer hair to cover it up a bit. I shaved it all off that evening since I couldn't look at the kid like that.

Yeah, that was my first thought too. I laughed so hard I cried and I truly was not proud of myself.
