Trade-in for 2014 Cayman Base

Hi Guys,

I have been wanting Porsche for long long time and I am thinking if I should trade-in my 2011 Z4 35is for 2014 Cayman base model. Need some suggestion and advise.

Thanks

Don't wait. Go for it! Here's some advise to a couple of Cayman Forums

Herrk thank you for the links. 35is is faster and more hp than cayman base since I am not planning to get cayman S. I dont know if I will feel huge difference on that.

Honestly it has crossed my mind to trade in my 35is but I would not be satisfied with a base Cayman. It's a BIG step down from the Z4 35is (especially since mine is tuned) in terms of speed. You will miss the torque especially. You won't realise it until you meet a 35is at the lights...

Sure it handles well, but I have owned lighter, better handling 2-seater sports cars with far less HP and they don't give me as much satisfaction as the 35is simply because of the raw feeling of power.

Then again if you get the Cayman you can always say ' but I'll have it in the corners! '.

A base also doesn't have the level of options that I'm looking for.........and Porsches are expensive to option up.

Even a Cayman S would not be a satisfactory upgrade for me vs the Z4 35is. It will have to be a 911 S or Turbo but I really don't appreciate the look of them vs other cars in that price bracket. The look just hasn't changed and I know it's their design philosophy but that doesn't wash with me. I just really wish Porsche would design something revolutionary for their 911 range once in a while....

As others said to trade a 35iS for a base is a big step in the wrong direction. If you can cough up some extra cash and get a CaymanS, thats a different story though i would not trade it in for Cayman S either.

A (used) 997.2 would be a better option I believe too.

OP, life is too short not to go for it if that is what you really want

base cayman traps at around 100mph .. only you can decide how much the straight line speed matters... personally i wouldn't be able too accept that performance level (and its not going to get many gains from modding without a ton of $)

how about a previous gen 987.2 PDK ?

Ah...its nice but in regards to design the Z4 (at least to me) looks much better. Though the interior is starting to get long in the tooth overall is still a stunning car. Pcar are a dime a dozen here. Might see one on every street corner. Z4 though is far more rare.

For me, the Cayman that holds the most appeal is an older S with an aftermarket turbo kit

I'm sure you've driven both 981 Cayman and Cayman S. To me, it is more of a sportscar than the Z4. The driver is in the center of the Porsche, and everything rotates around it. In the Bimmer, I sit in the back and point the car. It's a different feeling. The interior is well made too.

After reading this thread I looked up used prices for Cayman R and Boxster Spyder and the asking price for a few years old model is almost the same as the MSRP when brand new.

Craziness.

Does Porsche holds better resell value? I know Z4M holds pretty nice. My friend bought a 2007 Z4M 24k miles 3 years ago for 34k now still 30-34k

If you have nice curvy roads near you I would a 100% go with the cayman. The base has plenty of power to have fun with but personally I would have to get the S as every time I would see one I would kick myself for not getting it.
