Leaving my car for about 4 or 5 weeks :-(

Hi all! I will be leaving for Germany next Saturday for work for about 4 to 5 weeks. If my car is not being used or started for that long, will I have problems starting it up when I return?

Since it is relatively new it (the battery) will probably be just fine. It is on the ship that long or longer, when it imports into the US. You could get a trickle charger just to be safe. The new ones are pretty automatic they only charge it when it needs it - not a constant charging.

You shouldn't have any issues. If it's outside and extremely cold your battery may go down but not real likely since it is new.

Ours will be sitting for a couple of weeks as well. Headed to Maui to find our next house.

Not a problem it all. Put a trickle charger on the battery or disconnect the battery. One or the other. Also put about 4 psi more air pressure in each tire while you store it and yes do cover it a lot of dust will gather in 5 weeks.

Don't store it outside if you can help it.

Have a safe trip!

Thanks everyone!! I will leave it in my garage.

HerrK, I appreciate the link for the battery charger. Not bad for the price.

Silver-Bolt, you are moving to Hawaii? You might get sick of it after 2 years. A friend of mine moved out there and then got tired of being stuck on an island and came back after 2 years. I'm just saying.......

Rolf, I'll increase the air as suggested, no cover and may not have any time to get one now.

I'll try to see if I could get a tour of the Welt while in Germany.

I have been abroad often for a month or longer, never had any problems. All cars should just start...

Suggest you DON'T disconnect the battery. Just get the trickle charger as mentioned above.

at Die Welt there is no tour, you do it yourself ... visit the museum across the street and the factory if you have the time. It be worth your time.

I disconnected my battery last year on my former 2008 Z4 30is per BMW Service Managers recommendation all was fine.

In the next 3-5 years we will be moving to Maui. No worries of island fever. We are very ready to check out of the daily grind and ease into island life. If by chance we get board we hop on a plane back to the mainland. Can't see that happening very often. Currently we work all year to be able to spend 1-2 weeks in paradise. So why not live there full time instead?

The only reason I suggested leaving the battery connected Rolf is because if disconnected, you will need to reset all your current settings (seat positions, iDrive etc), including but not limited to getting the dealership to reset your maintenance notices.

Page 202 in the manual (MY11 version):

"Storage periods

Storage periods during which the vehicle battery
was DISCONNECTED are not taken into account. If this occurs, have a service center update the time-dependent maintenance procedures, such as checking brake fluid and, if necessary, changing the engine oil and the microfilter/activated-charcoal filter."

Ah thanks Dave,

I did last year on my 2008 30is disconnect the battery guess it was no problem then since I had no iDrive then nor do I now have an iDrive.

I don't think I be disconnecting my 2009 battery thanks again

I store my BMW's every winter, -----I use a BMW trickle charger (obtained in Phoenix at 2/3 the cost of the same unit in Canada), The BMW charger will provide that much more ammunition if something ever goes wrong, BMW can't blame the charger then

If you don't trickle charge it, the battery will go dead because the computer scans the car every hour or so, especially if locked. I made the mistake once of not putting a trickle on it and paid over $300 for a new battery.

A dust cover is a must and try to put the tires on something other than the cement floor of the garage.

And I don't disconnect the battery because I like my settings the way they are and don't want to have to reset everything

I use rugs or old floor mats, they seem to work OK.

+1 Mcbee! Bought the same BMW charger you did (but didn't get that deal though!). I figured if something were to go wrong, they won't blame their own equipment....hopefully!

Flpnout - I just use some old carpet under each wheel. Seems to suit me fine although others may be using something else.

Since I have been here in Colgne, Germany since Saturday, I see so many BMWs and other German cars without badges. I wonder if badges are an option price. I saw a few in every series including a DSB E89 Z4 without any badges. They only have the roundels. I kind of like it. All the cars look so much cleaner without them. When I get home I think I may might remove the the last badge on my trunk (Z4).

I currently have a 318 diesel as a rental and it does have a badge. It has a limited top speed of 188km as that is the fastest it can go. People here really use the fast lane as it should be. lol

I've seen several X1, hatchback 118 series, and I think even a 116. Taxi cabs drivers have E-Class.

In Europe it is a 0 Euro (no cost no money back) option to delete all badging.
