I plan to remove the summer tires and mount winter tires (BridgeStone Blizzak LM-25), then leave them on the stock 17" wheels and get non-RFT's on BBS or BMW 18" wheels, probably Michelin PS2, come Spring.

The winter tires will be for driving in late Fall and early Spring. I'll refrain from using the Z4 while there is snow or sand on the roads. I'll take my wife's Lexus SUV on the weekends and a limo ride to the airport for business trips. Then will get a used Jeep or 4X4 pickup as a winter car within a year or two.

Since I have an X5, the Z4 will sit during the few bad days we have in Charlotte. Don't really even need the X6 but I plan several trips to West Virginia in the winter.

Good plan I say

my plans are very similar, will be driving the wife's Jag it is a Type X and AWD when there is ice or snow on the ground.

I just cannot park my toy all winter long

It's just too hard leaving such a car in the garage for 6 month. 3 months will be hard enough!

The good news is that Connecticut winter aren't what they used to be. Gotta love Global Warming!

I'm running Yokohama all season tires but will try and avoid any really bad weather. That's when my R32 really shines.

I know ... I know, last winter I had the 2008 Z4 30is (traded it in May this year)
every time the roads were dry I took her for a spin around the block I just could not see her standing still

PS If one plans to park it for a longer period of time add about 10% more air pressure to each wheel, this was the recommendation from my BMW service manager.

Before I vote, what is the diff between #1 and #2? Do you mean paying for 'storage' in the #1 option, like keeping them at the dealership, whereas for #2, I'll just keep them at my home?

I will just use the other car(s). In NJ the winters can be nasty and if i use the car it will be extra nasty. If i store it we'll have a mild winter for sure. Having the car all full of winter grim would kill me. But I will take it for a spin here and there if it just cold, will help keep things lubricated etc.

Last winter I used snow 'socks' for mine.

Weather here can vary between 12 foot of snow and 'no show' so I wasn't prepared to fork out the cash for the winter tyres.

I bought these : http://www.autosock.co.uk/

Various reviews round the net have varying opinions. All I will say is that they were good enough to get me out and about in the city when the snow did come last year. Will use them until proven otherwise...

They are not my suggestion for long trips

My read is that #2 is putting a set of winter rubber on existing wheels and #1 is mounting a new winter tire/wheel set.

I'm keeping my Z4 all warm and toasty in the garage hooked up to a tender and covered once temps drop below 45 degrees F and will drive my 3 series touring from Nov-April, with a winter wheel setup (Blizzaks on 16" steel wheels) from Dec-Apr

Yes, I think you're right. Thx for clarifying. In that case, I'm #1 as I have a dedicated winter setup.

I grabbed at set of wheels and Bridgestone Blizzak WS-70s. I know everyone raves about the LM-25s, but in NJ we also get a wonderful thing that our weathermen call "Wintery Mix" which means snow, sleet, rain, freezing rain all in one package. So, I was a leaning more to craptastic weather.

Option 1 is a separate wheel/tire set (this is the preferred way ~ yes it is more costly, then you get some of your money back once you sell your car if you include the winter set, also you save on spring and fall mounting, balancing etc. Puts you in the driver seat if you like changing wheels yourself).

Option 2 you remove summer tires then mount winter tires on your wheels (I personally do not recommend this due to tire wear during mounting and removal also your alloy wheel can get damaged during the mounting process if the mechanic is not careful in doing his job).

I am very surprised that quite a few are thinking of option 2 Hmmmm

I'm going to do what I do every winter, park it in the garage with a charger and a car cover on it then drive my 4x4 pickup ... and my Gf is doing the same with her Z4 and her 4x4 SUV.
